My BN6 now has a Toyota W58 and I'd like to sell my 28% overdrive.
It didn't work when I bought the car I assume for the usual external electrical reasons.

Is there any trick to dismounting it from the trans? Is there any way of determining on the bench if it is sound mechanically?

Thanks in advance for any advice.

There is no trick to remove the OD from the tranny but you do need some special tools to completely dissassemble the OD. There are several thrust type washers, ball check valves, piston and piston rings which could be a problem along with the electrical problems. You would have to completely dissassemble it to really determine the problem. Probably best to let the next owner do what they want about getting it repaired. Have a good day!

Take off the big round plug underneath- if there is only minor metal flakes in there then it is almost certainly ok. If it looks like a whole load of tinfoil crammed in there then it might need repairs.

You can also spin up the input shaft with a drill and listen for the sound change as the od lever is lifted up. The drill should start to work harder about 1-2 seconds after lifting the lever. Doing this will also release any stress on the mainshaft splines- a situation which can jam the mainshaft in the OD and make it impossible to disassemble.

IMO an OD is worth far more when kept with the original car, assuming that you will at some time sell your car.
