Hey all,
Quick question, on a 67 BJ8 I recently purchased, the overdrive
engages fine but when I flip it off, it will not disengage
until it seems I either stop for something or turn the car off
and then start back up again. Is this the solenoid not
functioning right ?
Thanks,
Mike

Thanks,

Mike To Disengage the OD after the switch is thrown off when under way it is necessary that you also depress the accelerator pedal.

Mike -

Your OD is working as it is supposed to.

When you turn the OD off, you are supposed to stomp on the gas to disengage it. This gives you and instant shift down when passing. Perfect for passing cars on country roads. It works a little bit like a 1960's version of turbo lag!

If you just want to turn it off, press on the clutch and blip the throttle, and it will shift out of OD.

The circuitry is inspired for race/rallying, although strangely enough most factory and Warwick race cars used a simple on/off switch rather than having the complex system of throttle relays used on productions cars....

Either way it's a fun thing to have, always have a good excuse to blip the throttle and sound super cool when coming to a stop.

Cheers!

Should be no need to touch the clutch to "blip" out of OD. Just flip the switch to off, you will stay in OD until the throttle is about 1/5th depressed if it is rigged correctly. This is adjustable, so it is possible that you might need to depress the throttle more. Be careful that you are never at a speed at which you don't want to down shift. If you are doing 70 MPH and you flip off the OD and "blip the throttle" you will create lots of engine RPM right now. I usually wait until I am at no more than 40-45 MPH in top OD before I come out of it. I almost never shift into OD in 3rd or out of it in 3rd., but you can do the same in third or 4th gear. Once you start to think of it as an automatic shift in 3rd or 4th (and that it can go in or out in those gears) it gets easier.
I also never felt the need to "punch"out of OD to pass anyone in the 70 to 75 MPH range I use on the freeway. Seems to be enough torque in top OD for my needs. Remember, never try to go in reverse if your OD is not disengaged for some reason.

Hey y'all,
Thanks for all the info and advice on the overdrive issue. You would think
after all these years of owning Healey's ( 31 years worth ) I would have realized
what the problem might be. I'll still take a look at the solenoid and clean it
up as suggested since I've got to put in a new interior but looks like my
right foot was the problem !
Thanks,
Mike
