TR5/TR250 Overdrive Gear box oil

Healey guy operating in a foreign land. I'm resurrecting a 68 TR250. Just got it running after sleeping since 1979. On Healeys the trans overdrive use straight 30 WT motor oil. Can I assume the same on the Triumph? TIA

We argue a lot about that; Triumph said to use GL4 "hypoid" gear oil instead. The legend as I heard it was that they were having a lot of early gearbox failures with the straight 30 weight, and the GL4 helped protect the countershaft bearings.

My personal favorite is Redline MT-90. Doesn't make much difference to the OD as near as I can tell, but makes a significant improvement in how well the main gearbox shifts. Kind of expensive and hard to find in stores (I bought a case on Amazon), but worth it IMO.

Joe, I use 30W non detergent in both my A Type and J Types with no issues.

I used 30w in my 250 when I first put the A type overdrive in. It sounded as though the transmission gears were badly lacking lubrication. I went to StaLube 85/90 GL4 gear oil and I have had no problems. That was quite a few years ago. I live in a fairly warm climate.

+1 on the GL4. Used it in my 3A for years, and just changed the fluids in the 4 I picked up.
May go with the Redline when I get around to rebuilding the car.

I put Redline NS in the Alfa gearbox and it seemed to shift better with less grinding.

I am using Redline MT90. OD and box worked fine with 30W. Now works fine with Redline.

Thank you all for your thoughts. I have some Brad Penn 30 wt. at home so I will try that first and move to Redline if I'm not happy with the shifting. I do appreciate the help. Here is my team with the car
