As for the clutch and OD...it is not necessary. That said, I always clutch, as these gearboxes are not Muncies, and they are very old at this point. Anything you can do to minimize shock loads should go a long way to a problem free lifetime. Back in the day, I would literally bend shift linkages jamming Muncie's into gear, and the boxes loved the abuse. These Triumph boxes are not nearly as robust, and appear to be designed right on the limit of "minimal".
