Over, Under, and the Block...

The Over and the Under refers to the exhaust routing past the rear axle. I've been looking at the performance exhaust kits and I'm seeing that it looks like they are all designed to be routed under the rear axle. I climb under my car and I see the exhaust is routed OVER the rear axle. When I had my exhaust worked on I only had my cat and mid muffler replaced and didn't give the rest of the exhaust any thought. But now that I'm looking at various ways to improve the suspension, I'm wondering if I'm going to have to change the routing of the exhaust to be able to fit stuff like a panhard rod. The exhaust ran up and over the rear axle when I got the car, but the PO and the PO's PO have done things to the car that I'm having to undo to make it right. So, does anyone know what the stock way of routing the exhaust was; was it over the rear axle or under the rear axle? All the pictures I've seen so far suggest under, but all the pictures also use after market performance exhausts so I wonder...

Finally, the Block; as in lowering block. Is there any particular reason I should spend $90+ for the Moss lowering block kit versus $75 for the Bit-Tek block kit, or even less for 'Universal' lift/lowering block kits? I've used universal block kits in the past without problems, but seeing the price on the blocks for MGs makes me wonder if there's something special about the MG rear end that warrants such a comparatively high price for a chunk of milled/cast aluminum and u-bolts.

Just a couple of questions that keep me asking what and why... I'd like some insight on both of them if anyone has some knowlege to spill my way /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif
 
FWIW- I've got a Monza Exhaust and it goes under the axle.. then again, it came already rusted to the car /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smirk.gif
and I believe that my friends' 73 B's stock goes under the axle as well.
 
I agree with Moose33. Most exhausts I've seen on MGBs are under the axel. It's probably the way to go, espically if yo're gonna drop the axel (it'll get real tight for a pipe above there after that).
As for the blocks, I would feel safer buying a set thats been made especillay for my car. there is enough difference between manufacturers that I woulden't trust a universal set. but I woulden't have a problem buying the cheaper set for the MG. I know that Brit tek has a pretty good reputation.
 
I have never seen an exhaust go between the axle and body on an MGB myself...how does it fit? Is there a bump in the pipe that curves up over it?

yeah, the pipe curves up and over the axle much like you would see on a pick-up truck's exhaust. There seems to be quite a bit of room for the exhuast up there, except it's in the area that one would need for a panhard rod

Sorry to hijack the post, but I have been eyeballing the Monza setup, how does it sound? It will be a bit down the road, my exaust is not currently one of the problems. (I think.)
