over heating?

so, i drove the midge today
and everything went real well....
my only problem is:
i filled the radiator to the top
a couple days ago, but when i park
the car water squirts out the hose
connection to the overflow....
the temp gauge sits at about 7 oclock
when moving but goes up to around
430 ish when sitting in the sun not
moving.....semms ok, but why the eruption?
could my overflow cap be the problem? ....z

"filled to the top"

When heated, that liquid expands. After a heating and cooling cycle, your radiator will not be full. I don't know how much it loses at 7psi, but at least a pint or more.

Thus the modern day radiators on cars with the expansion tank.

I don't know what your 74 runs for a cap, but it easily starts to bubble over when you park it. The block has a lot of heat left in it to keep on warming things up.

Aye.

I think he does not have one.

i DO have a tank, but the water is
coming out around the place where the
hose connects to it......

it seems to run fine far as i can tell ......z

oh, i didnt see if there is water in the
overflow tank...will see in the morning...
waaay to hot out today! .....z

Has an overflow tank.

What you bet it is full when engine is hot.

should the overflow cap be venting?
mine seems to be sealed since the
water comes out the hose connection...z

update..
the hose clamp wasnt tight
and the overflow is empty....
my radiator is filled about half
way.....aint that kinda low? ....z

OK then, fix the clamp from the radiator to the overflow tank, no leaks now.

fill the raidator. Go for a drive. check the tank about half way. excess water in the radiator should go into the tank.

As the systems cools now the water in the tank, or some of it in any case should go back in the radiator.

Hope you are useing the correct type of radiator cap, the one for a pressure tank.

And yes half full is not full enough, must be above the fins about an inch.

ill do that jack....
my radiator has the bolt/screw
type cap, but the overflow has
a radiator type cap.....
its always been that way so im
assuming there is no serious problem...

i drove down to the lake today (2 miles)
with no problem, but ill fill er up and
give it a good test tomorrow....

btw, its shifting well now and the clutch
is definitely repaired....thx to all
that helped troubleshoot ....zimmmy

Keep in mind now that this radiator prob thing is just that a prob not a show stoper.

Mine is a show stopper. No rad in the car at the moment. Now I just found that my motorcycle has a flat and I am down to my truck as my only means of transport. Too late in the day for tire repairs. Will fix that tomorrow evening if I get home in time. I hope a new radiator solves my problems.

im not too worried...
i plan to switch my insurance
over this week and start drivin it  .....z

Way to go Zimmy. Keep us updated please.
