Out for a Sunday Drive

I had some spare time on my hands and decided to go for a run up Angeles Crest High Way. I also decided this would be a good chance to test the video capabilities of my digital camera, and the suction cup mount I got for it. Unfortunately, I only have 1 2GB stick of memory for it, and I, being a glutton for "hi-res" videos, only managed to film 19 minutes of video.

Now that I'm more familiar with file size and time lengths on Youtube, I think I'll do future videos on one of the lower resolutions. I figure if I can get more footage then I'll have more to work with and can remove some of the less interesting bits, etc.

Anyways, on my way back down Angeles Crest, I saw a sweet looking Jag E-Type heading up into the mountains for a drive. Was someone from our forums out driving their Jag in the mountains today? /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/grin.gif

I'll post a link to the video as soon as it finishes uploading to YouTube.

whew... that took a bit.

The wind noise isn't ~too~ bad all things considered. You can still clearly hear the engine. Oddly, my shifting between 3 and 4 sounds similar to an automatic transmission switching gears later in the video.

I could hear tires squealing!! hehehehe

Nice video Rob. Cameras seem to make the action appear slower, so I think you were hitting some good speeds. There is one edit in the video that is especially good where you found two right-handers of the same radius. I had to rewind to make sure. I was up there a couple weeks ago on my Superhawk, fun drivin’ ain’t it.

nunyas, great video i felt the camera angle was just right, the car sounded wondeful, love the downshifting, you drive it well, fantastic road, did i see some guy riding the down hill side on a bicycle? /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/thumbsup.gif

yeah, that was a guy on a bicycle early in the video. Man was that guy going FAST! heheh

Thanks for the compliments. Just playing around with this camera and it's video limitations is increasing my desire to pic up one of those digital camcorders that we were talking about in another thread.

I used to ride my bike up there all the time. Thousands of feet of climbing through pine trees is great. Motorcycles riding 90MPH through the turns is not. I avoided Sundays like the plague!

Rob - I watched about half of that this morning while I was getting ready to head out - did you ever have to pass another car?

Ok i watched it finally. I've been planning to pick up a cheap camera to mount in the GTS and you're really making me want to do it now! Maybe I should just make you sit in the passenger seat and try to hold onto it. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/devilgrin.gif

Yeah, I had to pass 2 cars ~early~ in the video. It was about 2.5 minutes after that guy on the bicycle, but that section of video got cut. I made the double car pass in the shortest passing section of the drive going into the mountains. Traffic was remarkably clear heading into the mountains.

As you can see in the video, there was quite a bit of traffic coming back out of the mountains. On my way back out, I got caught behind a few slow moving cars, but they were all courteous enough to pull into a turn out and let me by.

Oh... here's the route taken. I don't normally time myself, but I just happen to know that I stopped filming at 19.5 minutes, and had covered the highlighted distance:

Route taken on Google Maps

calculated average speed of 52MPH. Not "speed demon" fast, but not Driving Miss Daisy either /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/grin.gif

Wow! Nice area Rob!

Thats my old stomping grounds. Most of my early years was spend hiking up all those canyon trails (really built up now) up behind Devils Gate Dame.
