OT - how trace a car's SCCA history

They took my VIN at auto-x. I don't have a roll bar, as its not required in all classes.

Does the log book go with a race car when you buy it or does it stay with the previous owner?

Stays with the car to the new owner.

Unless it's lost or destroyed of course.

There will be a number stamped into the roll bar on the passenger side. That is the number issued when the car is first teched. It is registered and is listed in the log book. The log book is the only complete record for the car. The SCCA does not keep those records other than the log book number. If the log book is lost or destroyed, the SCCA can issue another one, but the individual races/events/ and notes are lost. Sometimes you can fill in some of the history if you know the drivers name and the car by searching the archives for race results. The log book will list the races attended, crash damage, things that need to be updated by the next race, and annual tech inspections. It will have two pictures of the car as raced, the transponder number, the roll cage specs, weight, race class, engine size, etc. in the front cover. Here is a picture of what a log book looks like.

Skip,

I was lucky enough to have 3 log books passed along with mine. Kinda cool as all the races are listed, damaged incurred, inspection reports etc. Also cool that two of the books have old front/rear/side photos of the car in racing trim.

Cheers,
Tush

Tom,

I assume that your Capri was in CalClub Region.
Start by posting on their forum on their website -
if they have one.Contact other Capri racers in the
SoCal area.
There's also a discussion group for Capris that
I can put you in touch with.

The first part of the number will be the the SCCA region number, but don't expect SCCA tech guys to keep records, I don't know of any system in the SCCA that accounts for the cars issued log books, normally waht in the log book tells the story, and remember, and entrant can sign off on a log book at a event as well as the driver, so thats includes another curve ball when doing research.
