Yes they are. I was in a 36 Buick with a straight 8 last weekend. Their are a lot of similarities (large steering wheels, simple controls, basic interior trim).
However TRs are interesting because they are antique and modern at the same time - disc brakes, rack and pinion steering, independant suspension, and fuel injection (european models).

A lot of those modern features seem tacked on. What other cars have the rear axles running ABOVE the frame rails? But I don't really disagree with you.
