original us mg dealers

In Greenville, SC, it was Snyders

In Asheville, NC, it was Harrys, that where my 67 MGB GT was bought new.

I talk with a guy form time to time, he and his father were MG dealer, for the life of me I can't rember where he is located though, somewhere in the Midwest, and while they still own sevearl new car dealership, he still pays with MGs, and sells a few parts for them, his name is Jimmy Denata.

There used to be one many years ago in Eatontown, N.J.! Maybe it's the onset of Alsheimer's, but I cannot for the life of me remember their name (and I was there at LEAST once a week!!).

Empire Sports Car Center, Boulder, Colorado

Jim Horton noted that the concept of dealer was prety open, that is confirmed by my own local research, in Lincoln, NE in the 50s the dealer was a man named Simpson, I discovered this through an advertisement in Road & Track for the regional distributor, which was none other than "Wacky" Arnolt out of Chicago, who had the limited production Arnolt Bristol and Arnolt MGs made.

Anyway, Simpsons address was listed as a residential neighborhood (regular home) address. The house still stands, so apparently he dealt the cars out of his home, wish I would have been around to see the cars.

Anyway in the 60s the dealer was Standard Motors in Lincoln, and in the 70s Misle, which also sold Chevy and many others.

I will see if I can scare up the old add and post a pic, it listed many 50s midwest dealerships.

Greg

Edit--pic looks better here than I thought, you can just make it out.

Here is some of the text--Distributed by S.H. Arnolt Chicago Illiois

Morris MG Riley and other leading imported cars

Chicago S.H. Arnolt (two shops)

Nebraska Omaha Loyal's British Motors (I think this was Loyal Kaskee(sp?) who raced sports cars out of Omaha in the 50s)

Anyway this is 1954, and lists dealers for Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Michigan, Misouri, Nebraska, Ohio and Wisconsin.

I was going to type them all but I am not that goood a typist.

We had 2 in Oklahoma City. Ralph L. Bolen Imports had BMC and Mercedes Benz. Bolen also had an Oldsmobile dealership across the street. Fretwell's handled BMC, Volvos and Alfas. All gone many years ago. I bought my first and second Mercedes from Bolen and a Volvo PV544 from Fretwell.

I have a "Passport to Service" brochure that lists all BL dealers circa 1973. Only problem is I can't seem to find it! Doh!!

No one has mentioned Inskip Motors in Manhattan. They were a big dealer.

My local dealer was Bennett, in Allentown on Union Blvd. Still there, and I have the reciept for my MGB.

As shown above, Imported Motor Cars (Started Out), became: Oliver C. Josephs in Belleville Il.

Didn't Spruell start out with BMC cars? I wasn't around Atlanta then, but I seem to recall something like that.

The BMC and later BL dealership I grew up with was in New Brighton, PA. "Boffo Motors".

Haven't looked in on this site in a while, but Boffo Motors was the dealership that my B was bought at. Of course the place is long since gone.

We had Zenker Felt Motors here in Eureka.
I was taken aback when I recently read in the
obituaries where Harvey Zenker died (Gary Felt-
- was the other partner).
I have a really nice set of license plate frames
on my TR6 that came from them. Also remember buying
parts for my Healey 100-6 from them.
