Original Steel Wheels

Hey folks, it's time to do something about the old steel wheels on my 69 TR6. They've been painted over the years but rust is present and I need to rehab the wheels or buy some alloys. I've got old 185 - 15 black Michelins that are over 10 years old so I drive rather easy on the road. I'll need new tires and want to go tubeless. Can I put tubeless tires on the old rims without any worry? If so I'll sand and paint, if not I'll likely go for new wheels. What do you all think is best? Thanks for any advice - Chris

I had mine striped then trued then powder coated then checked again

Yes, you can put tubeless tires on the old rims... I had tubeless on my '64 tr4 with the original steel wheels... No problems.. Of course I just upgraded to 60 spoke chrome wires...

I don't see any yet, but you'll probably get people warning you about tubeless tires because of the lack of "safety" beads. Don't listen to them! Absolutely no reason not to go tubeless with the steel wheels.

However if they don't run true (and most don't), you might be better off replacing them. The original wheels were none too strong, and bending (to straighten) them will weaken them further. Most wheel shops will refuse to work on them for that reason.

I'm leaning toward getting new rims and tires which will give me a back up set of wheels with the old tires. The wheel guys around my area want near $130/wheel to strip and powder coat the old wheels. For that price I may as well get new alloys. I was at a British car show last weekend in No. Virginia and saw some alloys with mid grey colored spokes that looked great but can't locate any on the web. Anybody know who may carry them? I'd like to keep the wheel size as original (15x5.5) if possible. Chris

Britain on the Green at Gunston Hall. Nice show, lots of TR6 models. My wife was a little disappointed so few TR3's were there. Rain chased away a lot folks at the end of the day. Thanks for any info on the wheels - Chris

I highly recommend Panasports. I have them on my TR-3B. They really are a fantastic set of wheels. My car was the white one at the show.

I checked the Minilite web site and they must have been the anthracite colored wheels, they looked great. Checking prices now, glad I've been saving my pennies.

Just a thought. I noticed there is a company manufacturing the "replica" American Racing magnesium wheels. I have seen them advertised in Ebay Motors. Any thoughts on these? I will see if I can dig up a picture.

Here's an attempt to add a photo ....... price on ebay for four is over $800. Not sure how this compares.

Referred to as CG360 Silverstone II.

No luck with the pictures - here's a link that includes photos as installed on a TR6 and TR250.
