Original "old" 1960'es Dunlop wire wheel paint code

Hi! My name is Kenneth, I live in Denmark and I have a 1964 Sunbeam Alpine.

I've already tried a few other forums on BritishCarForum.com. But I'll try the Austin Healey Forum as well to see if any luck here.

I really do hope that some of you guys are able to help me with the original old paint code use for by Dunlop for their wire wheels, which among other British car manufactors The Rootes Group used for some of their cars in the 60'es.

I'm in the process of restoring an original set of original Dunlop wire wheels, and actually I've been that for quite a while, since I can not find the needed infomation on the original paint code Dunlop used for their wire wheel. I've been told from a MGA guy, who claim to have an original paint can from ICI Belco P031-2358 (Meralichrome Aluminium) which he is quite sure is the correct and original colour, but I can not find any further paint info. anywhere, nor any people that can be of any further assistence, in order to have the original paint mixed. Also I have a scan of an old Rootes Group wire wheel drawing, that says that the correct colour should be Platinum finish, which makes me even more confused!

Please let me know if anybody can be of any help, or maybe know someone who can.

Thank you very much so far.

Kind regards
Kenneth Hansen

I wish my memory was better! Years back my father had a friend who worked in Birmingham for a company that supplied Dunlop, and he used to get my father's wheels stove-enamelled in the same way as Dunlop. It was certainly an "aluminium" colour, and a small tin stood on the shelf in the garage for ages, but I don't remember the exact name. Your friend's Belco colour is probably right, in my guess.

That was a very interesting input Roger. Do you somehow remember if Dunlop original Painted their wire wheels or Stowe enameled them. The reason why I ask this question is that the type of paint the MGA person came up with is a paint. Whereas you recall that Dunlop did the Stowe enamel. Let me know if you can help me come a little closer to the original treatment and maybe even the colour as well?

Roger is it somehow possible for you to find that lille tin somewhere? Or maybe find out who you fathers Dunlop friend was. I'm only asking since you could be the only key to solve what I've been searching for, for so long. I do realy hope that you can bring me a little closer.

Kind regards
Kenneth

Well, now, that was all 25 years ago or more when I lived in England, and I haven't done that since Maggie was Prime Minister! The paint tin is long gone, and so, sadly, have my father and his friend.

What I am sure of is that the wheels were stove enamelled, and the colour was "aluminium something", or "something aluminium". The paint was used as touch-up in case the enamelling got chipped, which it sometimes did, due I suspect in part at least to the flex in wire wheels.

My friend was seconded to BMC in Sodertalje Sweden to do remedial work on the imported cars including Twin Cams. The can he gave me was the exact paint used by Dunlop".

Have you tried the Moss Motors wire wheel paint? Seems to be a good match.

Rick, I was the one whom you helped by sending photos of your can. Still the ICI Belco code can not be traced in the files by the ones that took over the Company. Is it possible that I can buy a little sample (like a little model sizes can) of your paint, so I can have that exact paint mix analyzed and copied. I'll of course pay all the expenses.

Please let me know what you say?

Kind regards
Kenneth
