TR2/3/3A Original late # TR3B ? on Ebay

Ya realized the # was an A # after I posted.
 
'All original' can have many meanings depending on your point of view. Looks to me like non-original upholstery, several creative fixes, a fondness for black paint and perhaps an engine compartment that was once white.

Nevertheless, an interesting example in better condition that most unrestored TR3As that appear on eBay.
 
Interesting carpeting. Odd mix of black (tops) and white (tonneau and hood sticks cover) with the red interior. Who knows what that switch might be where one could have overdrive. Looks like adjustable steering. And what is it with those askew TR3 door handles?

Some, but not many nor wholly unexpected, improvisations under the hood (these always exist on fifty-year old cars): temperature sensor tube routing, fuel and vacuum lines.

I'm not sure why the rock guards nor the wheels have been painted black, although it is a very nice TR3 color, isn't it?

The seats look to be in leather (which is not a bad indicator of earlier care) and the right side-curtain fit would inspire envy in may a TR3 owner. The tool kit looks about as depleted as mine.

I agree with the above comments: this looks, as presented, like a very worthy project car.
 
I am pretty sure that the knob is a washer pump knob. After looking at this car if I were to build a resto mod 3 I might go black everywhere. Paint, interior, black alloys, hood and tonneau.
 
Does anyone know if black was ever offered by the factory on these cars? I rarely see a black TR3. And when I do, I just assume it's not the original color.
 
Yup, black was available from the factory. I'm sure Don E. will be along soon to tell us that his was black when he bought it new. Not a popular option it seems, or maybe they have all been repainted "arrest me" red.
 
IIRC, someone who should know once mentioned that they painted black cars on Friday. The reason was that as they went from one color to another they would just hook up the gun and spray until the new color came out clean, but after using black you had to clean everything before using the gun for anything else.

Of course most TR3s were painted at Mulliners so perhaps that story was about later TRs.

Anyway, I agree that black was a standard color -- interestingly I believe red was not offered until the cars had been in production for some years.
 
Had 2 3's, both originally black, both with red interior.
