There is an exploded view of the "Opus" distributor in the Moss MGB catalog, accompanied by the following comment:
"The original Lucas "Opus" electronic ignition used through 1979 featured the ignition amplifier mounted on the distributor body. As this system proved notoriously troublesome and unreliable, 1980 cars were produced with the "CEI" system which had a remote amplifier and was highly reliable."

I second the above advice. The Opus is a terrible piece of Lucas work at its worst. What followed in 1980 was an MG copy of a Jaguar HEI ignition system with a separate ignition amplifier. This if a very good solid state system but you cannot get the distributor required to make this conversion. It is out of production and not availaable any where. The repair parts are available but not the basic distributor which is unique. The best option that is available is the Pektronic kit to convert an older point type distributor. The Pektronic is considerably less expensive than a CEI if it were available. Do not use an Opus system; it is hopeless. Jack Farrington

Thanx for the info....this appears to be non opus distubutor. and the wiring harness on the car appears to have an opus plug on it.....wonder if it was changed...hmmmm....

Just curious, were you putting an MSD 6 on that distributor? That's what I'm contemplating next.

i have a crane xr700 and a coil to go with it. not sure if it will fit. havent had a chance to take a real good look at it. i think it is possible it may have been changed from an opus..since the harness on the car has a 3 prong plug. i spoke to a gentleman at Motorhead . he seemed to think the petronix would be a better fit. another post on here says it wont. i need to look and see i guess. i appear to have the cei. maybe i shouldnt bother to mess with it...If It Aint Broke.......
