Here's the thing.
I have this little '97 Grand Am as my daily driver that I love. It really is a decent little car, looks good (retina searing red) and has all the stuff on it.
So last fall, I was listening to my iPod through the stereo...sorta loud, but not extremely so...and one of the door speakers went all buzzy on me- still works and sounds OK at lower volumes, but not good. I figured- sooner or later, I'll replace it.
I've also had an intermittent problem with the power windows. It wasn't really much of an issue until a couple of weeks ago until on a cold, rainy day, window went down, did not come back up.
So I decided to dig in and fix the front windows...on both sides because both have been dodgy from time to time. But wait- I'll have the door panels off- perfect time to replace the speaker...but you can't replace just one side, that would be wrong.
So I'm at the stereo store...factory quality speakers, inexpensive...oooo, what's that over there?...upgrade speakers, more than twice the price, but pretty, oh so pretty (but completely hidden when installed). Why not?
But wait, I can't replace just the fronts with nice speakers...most of the sound comes from the larger rear speakers....oooo....matching rear speakers....oh so pretty (and also completely hidden when installed). 4 way 6x9s.
What's that? You have a clearance section? Hmmm, that's a good price on an amp and a 10" subwoofer....don't really need it, but I didn't need the upgrade speakers either...why not?
So, the windows are done...the front speakers are done...the rear speakers are in, but the back seat and trim are still out. Tommorrow, the amp and sub.
Problem is, everything sounds great. Why is that a problem? I used a hard-wired FM modulator to adapt my iPod which gives the sound quality of a strong FM station. That was fine with the old speakers, but now I can hear background sound I couldn't hear it before. I compared it to a CD with some of the same songs- no background noise. Now, I need the cable that hard wires the iPod to the head unit...not aftermarket mind you, because I like a stock look.
It never stops.
