One of the Reasons I hate High-Tech

Went to buy a water pump for my Dakota,& when I went to pay
for it with my Visa card,I was told that "It didn't go through".
I went by the credit union to find out why.No cars in the parking lot,
& the doors were locked.Turns out it's a holiday (President's Day).
I called the number on the back of the card & got looped back and -
forth,& finally got through.Turns out that they blocked my card due to an
almost $700 charge to an AT&T store.
I have no idea how someone got my card number,& would love
to find out who used the card number for that purchase.
Is there any way to find that out?

You didn't really explain why you hate high tech. You most likely won't be responsible for the charge. BTW, AmEx would have been open. Don't know about my credit union though.

Got my card cancelled today for the very same reason - don't love high tech but appreciate that they flagged the charge instantly.

You should be able to find out what AT&T store, but it probably was your id faked to go along with the card info. If I understand you correctly the $700 didn't go through, outside the usual pattern for charges I expect, and stopped the card. Over the last few years I've had that happen a couple times. One for someone trying to get cash on a motel in northern CA and one for someone trying to transfer $30k to Nigeria. They didn't go through and I found out when I went to use it like you. Pain in the behind, but better than the alternative.

A few years ago I got a call from the bank about a strange charge attempt on my VISA card. Someone tried to use the number to pay for a $7.65 doll of some sort. They said that is a common practice, try to put a small charge through to see if it works then hammer it. I still had the card but cancelled it right then.

AmEx is my go to card. They are quick to protect your account. A couple of years ago someone stole my MasterCard & AmEx card. Perp ran up $4k on my MC. AMEx immediately locked my card when the lowlifes tried to rent a car with my card.

that's exactly what happened - about 11.50 on two transactions and then VISA flagged it for a larger purchase. New card on the way

The reason I hated that was it was hard to get to a real person.
I tried to get someone at the AT&T fraud center. You can't talk to a
real person there either.

Had the same thing at Omaha airport when I went to pick up my rental car. The charge would not go through and being 12 midnight on a Sunday I kept getting put through to their Convenience center. Had to enter my card number then my phone number and was told that was not the number that was on record for the card. Tried the home number but No go. Finally spoke to a person who said let me put you through to the right place and I was back to the Convenience center. After an hour of trying I got another person who said I see there 2 attempted charges in a car rental center within minutes so the card was blocked.
So it seems the car rental person messed up somehow and triggered the block. Made me arrive at the hotel very late. Did I mention it was 12 degrees in the car rental garage. When I got the card sorted out and explained to the rental person I got the "Well that happens some times" No apology or anything.

Not always, but usually, saying "representative" in a voice prompt will get you to a human.

I suspect AT&T doesn't know or doesn't care - all they would know is whether a charge has been accepted or declined - and if declined, the customer walks out the store. My charges were through Google Pay (which I don't have) - but my conversations were only with VISA.

Some years ago a Sony Vao desktop computer showed up at my wife’s office addressed to her. It was ordered through Walmart and billed to her Amex card. She called Amex and found out that someone got her number (we think it was someone at her work) and had it shipped to her office where the lowlife was going to intercept the box. Amex reversed the $1,600 charge. We called Walmart to pickup the computer; they never did despite multiple calls to them. After many months Amex sent a letter saying the “case” was closed and to keep the item.

Years ago, when we first started playing with Brit cars, we needed to buy some parts from Rimmer Brothers - the only guys that had the parts we needed at the time. We used our credit card and sure enough three minutes after ending the call with Rimmer Bros, the card company called askihg about a tranaction with a company it the UK. We were pleased to get that call; we thanked the person for the attention and asked him to repeat the charge amount. We had the amount in pounds, not dollars.
