not ready to start drilling holes but I am interested in using a mirror that mounts in the side curtain hole on a 59 bn6. I see that moss has a mirror but I am not particularly fond of the rounded rectangular shape. any other suppliers that supply such but with a more rounded shape. pics are appreciated if you have a suggestion! thanks in advance for any help.
 
You can use the regular Lucas-style mirrors Moss sells. I'm running a Raydyot mirror, but here's my old Moss stem in the sidescreen hole.

I have a pair, L & R, branded as Harley Davidson. These came on my BN7 mounted in the forward side curtain holes, with a threaded shaft emerging at the bottom of the hole and held by a chrome lock nut. Unfortunately, I cracked the paint around both holes while trying to snug these down and went to another system. Anyone using this type of mirror should come up with a way to avoid what happened to me. Because of a couple of sports misadentures, first golf, then tennis, etc., I have only one eye, the left one. I find an autobahn mirror that mounts with a suction cup on the lower left corner of the windshield plus an inexpensive additional mirror I mount to the right of the dash-mounted mirror work well for me. We Floridians rarely install our hoods (tops), so I don't know how adequate my system will be with the hood mounted. I have an autobahn mirror on my Porsche, as well, but there I only use it to see if anyone is alongside me when I change lanes. It serves pretty well as a general rearview mirror on the Healey. The Harley mirrors are available.
 
steve, did you remove the original side curtain mounting hardware to mount the mirror. Or, did you leave the original hole mounting in place?
 
Maxwedge - not sure what you mean. I've always had a hole in the body through which my current Raydyot mirror is attached. It is outside of the sidescreen so it still works in the rain. I never mounted the Lucas mirror that way - all I'm saying is it can be done. The mirror must be removed in order to install the sidescreen and vice versa.

The original side curtain mounting hardware should remain in place. It keeps the door skin from being deformed when one tightens down the mirror nut.
 
steve, john answered my question. thank you for the picture. is the raydot available and where? thanks for the replies.
 
Raydyot-style mirrors are widely available in a variety of finishes. I bought a brushed -aluminum version from the UK (Maybe Holden's - can't remember) which has a gently convex mirror which I really like. The finish was originally like a zippo lighter. I buffed the hard varnish off for a natural polished aluminum look. I also replaced the #8 sheet metal screws with rivet nuts for #6 machine screws for a less clunky look.

If you like the polished look, these look like a good bet:

Mine happened to come with a slightly convex mirror. But there are convex mirrors out there the same diameter. Blind spot mirrors tend to be severely convex. I think the Brits use a slightly convex mirror on the passenger (left) side.

I actually adapted one of these convexes which I bought off Amazon. It was thicker so I had to elongate the two screw holes to accommodate the thickness. When I bought my Raydyot, I didn't realize it was convex - it looked flat - that's why I went to the trouble of ordering a convex for it.

I'd gotten used to using a convex Lucas on my driver side. They have a nice field of view and because of their design the mirrors can be switched between the LH and RH posts.

Before buying a Raydyot, I'd try to inquire if it's available in convex.

steve, i hate to belabor this but i am speaking of the curved arm attached to the raydot mirror...not the convex lens?. i have not seen a raydot mirror with a curved arm similar to lucas mirrors.
 
Max - apologies for not being clear! My Raydyot is mounted with the attached base that shows in the product pix above. It is mounted in a hole drilled in the bodywork which is a few inches outboard of the position of the side curtain.

I dug out my old Lucas mirror, which I'd disassembled in order to get into the box. I pulled out the post (the curved arm) and positioned it separately into the side curtain hole so as to demonstrate that the Lucas mirror would work in the side curtain hole. What you're seeing is me holding the curved arm in position for the pic, next to my Raydyot mirror which is bolted to the door.

randy do you have a larger view of the car...trying to get a better perspective of how the mirror looks! ive got my bn6 running and putting in a new interior. I don't like the way it sounds. hopefully the glass packs will burn out!
