One head stud larger than others

Isn't that the way it always is? One head stud is larger
than the others.

So, what does this mean? Does it have a specific place it
goes?

Also, as these studs are installed, which end threads into
the block, the end with the greater number of threads or the
one with the lesser number of threads?

Oh, and if that one that is special goes into a specific
place, can you please tell me where?

Thanks,

If the car had air conditioning there would be 2 studs in the first 2 positions on the right side that were longer. The longer stud in the picture doesn't appear to be long enough to be an AC bracket stud. How much longer is it?

Ah, ha! Got half the puzzel figured. The shorter
threaded end goes into the block so as to leave the
threads for tourqing.

Now that one little longer fella....

2W,

Where is the other one? There should be two.

And they go at the front of the head, on the outside of the valve cover. Don't go by this lower photo, as these are ARP studs, which are all the same length. I just posted it for reference to the front two studs on the right.

Hmmm. Don't know about the other, Paul. That's the
only oversized one in my set. Maybe they need to be
longer to accomodate some other engine hardware.

Anyway, your engine is sitting in the car???? How
exciting. Gonna look real pretty with all that
chrome on top.

Thanks for the help, Paul.

As far as I know, my car was not equipped with AC. Wonder if they built them AC ready,
for instance, even though the upgrade was never installed?

A previous owner could have then changed one of the head studs out, leaving
just one a bit longer.

Thanks much for the help.

Don't know about the TR6, 2Wrench but on my 3, the long stud is there so you can mount the rear lifting bracket. Could it be something like that?

2W,

No, that's an old picture from my head swap. I have to pick up the block at 1:00 today and take it to Erik's for the head to be put on after painting, etc.

Put the longest bolt on the front right side and don't worry about it.

My Spitfire had two longer (not larger) studs on passenger side of the engine closest to the firewall. They are longer to mount the lifting hook.

Thanks to all. I put that stud on the right front.
Not gonna worry about it.

All studs are in place. Received the Payen top side
gaskets (received a wrong set by mistake previously)
and now awaiting one......yes, I said one washer for
a head stud.

Further I might say this: I had a question as to which
end of the stud gets screwed into the block and which
end stays straight up.

I am happy to report a way to remember is this:
You want the nipples sticking straight up.
(will you ever confuse this question again?)

Now cause we like 'em, here is the engine; studs
screwed into place like soldiers guarding the
castle. Notice how in the plastic container, one
lone (empty) space waiting to be filled by a washer.
Could arrive any day now.

Cause I like to talk a lot: Notice the Carmen red
residue in the plastic container previously used to
clean paint gun parts.

Patiently awaiting parts.....

(Two buzzards sitting in a tree, one addresses the other):

"Patience, (_ell), I'm gonna go out and kill something!"

I can identify.

Bill: When you gonna install your cam?

The cam is already in the block. The head shop just called it's ready to go. I will install the head tomorrow and try to time it all this weekend at the latest. We have some dial indicators and mag bases here at work I hope to borrow.

How did yours go?

Well, Bill, after beating the issue to death, I
think I've resolved that I think it's done correctly;
but, only time will tell. I am so slow and learning
every step of the way. Crawling along.

Curious if you could post a pic. Actually, you're
building a four cylinder, huh? In that case, we'd
be different anyway.

Be cool to see some pics anyway.

Best,
