Have been neglectful of my own LAN and some 'funny' things happening over the last week or so. The "big" machine (a.k.a. G.P.U.) runs a CentOS, it's the one I'm usually on to do work and heckle youse-guys. It's in the garage, LAN'd up thru a rack panel and switch inside th' hovel. Thing started draggin' when trying to access websites and download large O/S files or load pages. I blamed Verizon at first but realized the wireless router allowed me access with no issues. This AM, to keep moving to stay warm out there I started chasin' the CAT-5 wiring, bypassing various stuff and found the culprit. A little toy 5-port hub... buried out there between bikes, cabinets and piles of STUFF. Bad part is: this has happened before, just long enuff ago for me to forget about it.
I'd reconfigured the networking warez on the Garage Processing Unit two days ago, could access the servers and workstations on the LAN but no web browsin' and three outta five times the mail client would time out before it pulled email off the server. GAH!
Stupid bit is, if it were a client's business I'd be hunting the StupidStuff first. With my own setups I tend to follow the "modified K.I.S.S." rule, ie; I.T.S.S. (It's the Software, Stupid!). My bad.
Wonder if I'll remember this the NEXT time things go all wonky.
