Congratulations to London for hosting the Olympics. It's a tremendous undertaking, and we all look forward to the 30th Olympiad! This with Queen Elizabeth's 75th anniversary - quite a year!

Watching the opening ceremonies now.
 
Fabulous show. Really enjoying the nation-parade.

The deaf kids signing/singing the British national anthem were wonderful.

We have one, it's on now but I hardly ever watch it. Kelly like her cop "law and order" type shows.
 
I had a ball watching Lilly,our 7year old Granddaughter
dance & make comments on the opening ceremony.
When they showed the Beatles singing Yeah,Yeah,Yeah,she
said "I know that song!".It was hard trying to explain the last
50 years or so of music that was shown.

The first half was good. The second half sucked.

Whether TV people did it or the original producers of the show did, the cutaways from the <span style="font-style: italic">live show</span> to video was just annoying. During the whole pre-industrial age show they kept showing old videos of people running or other things presumably from old olympic games. The videos were totally unrelated to the live show and caused us to <span style="font-style: italic">not see</span> what was happening on-stage. It was like trying to watch a concert with someone constantly flipping back to ESPN.

The announcers couldn't seem to just shut up either. I finally made a comment during "Jerusalem" that "any second now they're going to talk <span style="font-style: italic">over the song</span> and tell us about it". Sure enough that's what they did. This isn't a football game or the Rose Parade and doesn't require a running dialog; people tuned in to watch the show, they're not so stupid that they need a constantly running explanation of what they're watching.

Still, the whole first half was really enjoyable but the second half reminded me of a '80s MTV video and just as bad.

The parade of nations (I guess that's what it's called) was ok. I liked the Canadian uniforms the best. There was no doubt about where they were from, with "Canada" proudly emblazoned across the front. Ours had a Ralph Lauren logo dominating the left side and a small US Olympic Team patch on the other. I'm not sure whether they were from the Nation of Polo Ponies or the USA. Let's not forget the Berets too: Rusty Griswold, we found your hat!

I far prefer the winter games and have little interest in the summer. Hopefully though, they'll show the handful of events I want to see (they're stream-casting a lot of it so I'm optimistic). The rest of it though...well, there's Netflix :smile:

Was just reading what a closely guarded secret it was. And that the Sun newspaper did report it - on April 1 so people thought it was an April Fool's day story.
 
It was less of a secret in North America anyway. Pictures and videos of the whole thing were online before it was broadcast on the east coast, and I understand they did an additional 3-hour delay for west coast viewers.

FWIW I've been watching a little on my Motorola tablet. Just finished the Archery event. Quality was outstanding with absolutely no "play by play" garbage. They are running commercials though - which I don't mind, but after a couple of ads with basketball players and subway it gets old.

They appear to have full-coverage on-demand replays too. I wanted to see a shooting event, punched it up, and it started playing as if it was live.

Access is apparently available on the net without a tablet too. You apparently need to have a cable/satellite subscription to see it (the tablet app will give free access in 4-hour block from what I can tell).

This <span style="font-style: italic">seems</span> like a far better situation than what I've seen in the past. During the winter olympics I'd tune in to see the the Biathlon then after showing a few minutes they'd switch to figure skating or snowboarding for 20 minutes. Or so it seemed.
 
Did anyone catch the opening tribute to the victims of the 7/7 terrorism? It was lovely.
 
Update on my last comment: the online viewing is excellent. Absolutely no voice-overs on what I've watched but the coverage of everything has been every bit as good as what they'd so on TV (multiple cameras, scoring, etc).

So far this morning sailing and skeet shooting, actually one on each monitor :smile:
 
I watched a bit of it last night. Men's Gymnastics. I was surprised at all the empty seats.
