What a great opening show last night!

When I was a kid, the common image of China was:

- millions of ill-fed people wearing thick grey "suits",

- riding bicycles and

- holding a "little red book".

The progress that country has made in 50 years is simply astounding.

Best wishes to all the Olympians in their quests.

Could get very political. No further comment!

Is it me or is this topic turning a bit weird ...

The Olympic games just started. It was a great opening celebration.

Where do the question marks and kangaroos fit in?

I agree the openeing ceremonies were amazing. That stadium is a technological marvel with the large 500 ft video display in the floor, and the projected video roof panels. Very well done and well planned by the Chinese.

It was without question an incredible show. I only wish the Olympics had a more fair playing ground. As an example, a few Bonairians were able to scratch together all they could get and afford just to make it there and had to borrow windsurf boards last time. I would like to see everyone get the same board, the same bicycle etc. How do small countries even begin to compete when multi millions are spent just on equipment by the big guys?

It also seems the means to the end is "who got the most golds". Forget about the losers who got 2nd and 3rd place. Again when a county brings 800 athletes who do you expect to get the most.

I don't know, but I'd like to have on of those self-hovering cameras!

Wake me when the winter olympics are back.

I'm gonna sleep through THEM, too!

Without getting political, the opening ceremony was jaw dropping! impressive and stunning, and more than a touch frightening if you stop and think about it.
I'll only venture as far as to say, the Chineese are letting you see exactly what they want you to see.

No politics intended, but Bill, looks like your not the only one!!! :jester:
PS: me too

!! And, the opening was an awsome spectacle, artfully presented, no matter what! The two-thousand and eight antique drums segment was an amazing display of the mass precision the Chinese seem to have perfected!
That said, I do feel there is something that has eroded from the original concept of the reason for holding the Olympic Games in the first place, and that is NOT to be the show-case for the hosting nation!!!

Ok, I'll be fair - I turned it on this morning and tried watching. Italy and Korea were playing football (er, soccer). It was pretty good, except the absolutely stupid commentary. One of the announcers was pretty good, the other one needed to have her mic turned off (maybe she gets paid by the word). YAWN.

'k - I'm done now

Agreed but I would say the entire concept has eroded not just something.

I was surprised to hear that some countries pay a large sum of money to any of their athletes who win a gold. Also that if someone did not make the team in their own country they become a quick citizen of another and then qualify there.

It is especially amazing what they can do with Computers (I mean besides constant attempts at hacking my server)

Opening ceremony was really awesome.

I'm still in amazement at the 300 foot long LED display!

Holy moly, how'd they do dat???

If you can, try to catch some of the badminton: it's not the same game we used to play as kids!
