Olympians Robbed in Rio!

And I think it will cost them LOTS of endorsement money for future earnings. Just stupid.

Not to mention possible suspension for a long time from swimming. It was pointed out this morning that Phelps got 3 months for a picture of a bong, so how much could they get for vandalism, false reporting and apparently possible criminal charges in Brazil. They may have flushed away their amateur careers.

It's about time those guys grow up. Good grief - Lochte is 32!

Also interesting, all the comments on how bad Brazil is. Now those comments seem to be tapering off.

Hope so... but Rio is still pretty laden with crime (at least at the periphery). I've known a lot of people that have visited, and about 1/2 of them were victims of somewhat petty crime (theft of a necklace - that sort of thing). The poverty in the hillsides is awful, and the contrast to the beach culture striking.

Proves you shouldn't believe every thing you hear and furthermore you shouldn't bad mouth a country before you have all the facts.

Amen! Thanks for saying that.

What ever happened to telling the truth? Or taking responsibility for one's actions? Or maybe I just don't understand these young folks today. If Lochte insists on sticking to this story, he should be given a choice - tell the truth or be stripped of your medal - and maybe those of all your teammates too. That will tell what kind of a jerk he is. But in today's America, he'll be a celebrity for sure, with appearance on TV and perhaps a book. I'm glad my Mom is not alive to see what's happened to her beloved country.

I've been to other cities in Brazil on business but never Rio. I recall the food as superb (on an expense account) and the people as friendly. Traffic in San Paulo was the worst I've ever seen. We spent some time in a few different neighborhoods and played some pickup soccer with some kids who very ~very~ good. My family came over from Portugal not all that long ago so it was fun meeting people who could actually pronounce my name. Monetary inflation at the time was crazy. I went to a bank to change money & they suggested a second-floor place nearby that would give better rates. They said to go quickly, because the exchange rate was changing hourly.

But Rio itself has a very bad connotation in my family. A young cousin (~25 yrs old) visited there about 20 years ago and was murdered at a bus stop, apparently because he didn't want to surrender his watch. Quite a shock.

Lochte's reputation is that of a liar, forever. And a bad one. Too bad he stole so much attention off those who deserve it.

Actually, similar stories here (though how shocking about your cousin). Otherwise, great people, terrific food and some fantastic sites!

It's a shame, in my opinion, that so many poor people didn't get the access they were "promised" to the Olympics. I believe that there were supposed to given many thousands of tickets to people that couldn't afford to go. And then to see such prime land go to a golf-course (which I've read will be a public one when the Olympics are over - but that won't go over big with a lot of the populace). Oh, well, I suppose all Oympics have their issues.

He's washed-up.

Hey, let's end this thread on a positive note:

Excellent. Positively love Jobim's music. He also does a nice version of his song himself.
Getz here is classic.

I bought that original album and its follow-up album back in the '60s. Still have them. I also play Girl from Ipanema on the piano. It was the original bossa nova before the Americans ruined it, e.g. Edye Gorme "Blame it on the bossa nova", et als.

IMHO, I thought Rio pulled it off pretty well. Early on I didn't think it would turn out well but I am happy that most all went safely. I went to the '72 olympics in Munich; luckily left the night before the stuff hit the fan. Had a great time- it's a five ring circus and people from everywhere. Kind of like the Rolex 24.

It did turn out well... and the closing ceremonies nice.

And now Lochte still can't admit it was all a made up story to cover their drunk childish activites. Nope, it was "overly exaggerated" in his telling of the incident...

He's already been dropped by a Speedo (and 3 other sponsors).
