Can anyone remember the name of the guy on TV around 1960 who would write a child's name on a sketch pad then turn the name into an image, usually an animal? This could have been a regional (Boston area?) show. I'm wondering about the guy's name, and the TV show itself.

At first I thought of Captain Kangaroo's Magic Drawing Board, but that's not it. And I don't think it was on Ding Dong School, Romper Room, Andy's Gang, Howdy Doody, Winky Dink, or Kukla Fran and Ollie.

Any memories?

I used watch Jon Gnagy "Learn to Draw" as a kid.
Is that the person you're thinking of?

My mom bought me a "Jon Gnagy Drawing Set". It consisted of a piece of clear film that you taped to the black and white TV screen and some markers. You could trace at home what was being drawn by Jon Gnagy.

Wow - didn't know about the Gnagy clear film bit.

But I did have a Winky Dink Magic Screen - clear vinyl you put over the tv and drew on. Winky Dink would draw a cartoon, but part of it was "missing". The clown doesn't have a nose!

So at home you drew the nose, and saw the clown's face smile.

Probably the first interactive tv for kids.

At last! A friend sent me the answer to the Great Mystery of the Ages!

It was a local Bozo the Clown show. Watch the artist at 6:00 - he takes a kid's name and makes it into a cartoon.


Ah - now I can die a happy man.

I was never a big fan of Bozo. My tastes back then turned toward a much more highbrow and sophisticated kids show - Icky Twerp and his Slam Bang Theater!
