I do lots of scanning! A few years ago I worked through my dad's old Kodachrome slides just on my own, very time consuming... But I use a slide viewer first to weed out the less interesting ones, or ones that are obviously very blurry, etc... Then scan the ones that look the most interesting...
I'm pretty much finished with old family photos by now, but these days I still scan quite a bit from my found photo collection, mostly prints, occasionally slides, and even more occasionally vintage negatives! I have managed to acquire some vintage negatives from as far back as WW2... I use an Epson V600 scanner, a flat bed scanner that does prints, 35 mm negatives, medium format negatives and slides... It did cost me about $300 when I bought it three years ago but well worth it...
WW2 era Washington, DC from a negative I found, part of an entire binder full of them!
Another one...
And check out the close up detail on this one... https://farm9.staticflickr.com/8501/8297273524_68ab786388_o.jpg
Here's my vintage photo collection as posted on Flickr, both family photos and found photos... https://www.flickr.com/photos/sherlock77/collections/72157624896888347/
