General TR Old robbins top in box

Hi all,

I bought a Robbins top in 2008, and it has sat in the box since then. I opened it last weekend, and it “looks” great. No discoloration, windows perfectly clear, etc.

However, I understand the vinyl shrinks over time…

Should I try to install, or is it a hopeless cause?

I realize the lost expense - $450 for a replacement from Robbins. Normally a frugal guy like me tries to use old before replacing. However, there is considerable labor involved, as well as bits that are “one time use”: the various snaps and lift the dot pieces, and given the top is glued in places, there is considerable re-work.

Thoughts / experience?

I got a Robbins top a couple years ago, and, frankly, it just didn't fit well. Based on my own admittedly limited experience, I would trust an old one more than a new one.

You can check the length around the rear edge and compare it to the car. That's the only dimension that isn't adjustable in some way.

Thanks all. I’ll take the measurement; fundamentally the top looks good. If the measurement looks ok, I’ll have a go.

In terms of what’s to lose: a Saturday - worth a lot to a parent 😀!

Onward-ho!

I bought an NOS top a couple if years ago and determined that it was quite old. The vinyl looked great and at first the windows looked good, clear and such. But once I got it out and looked at the windows they had dimples all over them. I was able to get the windows replaced at a local shop. I then installed it on the car. I recommend you only try to install it after getting it very warm and on a warm day. It did fit but was tight from front to back.

Has anyone used an electric blanket for top installation? Seems a convenient way to get the top evenly warm… (not too hot!)

Thoughts?

Let the sun heat it up, then lay it on the bows, I usually start by clamping to the windshield header rail and various places working toward the back. The hot sun is your friend, you might have to pull and re-clamp a few times but give it a go! Patience is the virtue, don't try to rush.

I waited 4 years on my tr3 Robbins Top and the top was fine from sitting in the box. I found the Robbins Top fit very tight and a little longer over the door opening compared to other brands that I have put on over the years. From the front to the back there was zero extra room. In fact, I was amazed I got it to work. I worked from the center out then set the back with what I figured would be the minimum needed in the back and pulled things to the front as I worked it and just stayed with it until I got done on a hot day. I like the idea of a heating blanket. I watched some videos where they used steam.
