That is Paul Newman, right? He did drive for Bob Sharp's team in the 70's, if I'm not mistaken?

That would be him, We usually pitted right near him.

...I used to think I liked you, Paul...

Not only P. N. Newman, but Jim Fitzgerald, too. Raced with him a lot in the late 60's in the south east when he was factory guy for Datsun. Great guy, would do anything for you. A real blow when he was killed.

Jim

It was a great loss, as was Mark Donahue at that time.

Thanks for posting the photos.

I was there that day.

I crewed for a BMW 2002 that was in the same class, B Sedan, as P.L. Newman's 200SX in your photos. My driver actually was in first place for a while. "We are leading a National!" But then he overcooked it a little in 10 and had to lift. P.L. got by on the straight.

The Lotus belonged to Dick Souan (sp?), a very fast driver of a very fast Giant Killer Elan. It was called Electric Raspberry Racing. I had one of his bumper stickers, but who knows where it is now.

Thanks for bringing back memories of my salad days!

What color was the Bimmer. I probably know it. We raced C Sedan in 1500 Honda.
Alfa's would kill us every time

John, How about this one or 2

The 2002 was very colorful. It was base white with horizontal parallel stripes following the rocker panels, up over the wheel wells, and across the front and back. Like a parfait. From the bottom up I think they were orange, blue, and yellow. A fancy #41 BS in white outlined in black. Mt. Airy Motors on the sides, Checkered Flag Foreign Car Parts across the top of the windshield and Vogt's Auto Parts on the air dam. Wide flares and gold BBS modular wheels. I don't think I have any photos.

I got the Souan right, but his first name was spelled "Dik". For some reason, he wanted the Elan production class to be RAISED. From CP to BP I think. I know this sounds backwards. So he ran in A Sports Racer because it would be in the same group as A Sedan and B Production and he would beat cars in these classes. Of course, the BMW would also finish in front of many AS and BP cars, but not all of them!

The Corvette seems kinda familiar, but I don't recognize the other cars. That was a long time ago!

Remember the BMW well, as soon as you mentioned Mt Airy.
In fact if I dig deep I probably have photos of it going thru the carousel

I would really appreciate seeing any old photos of the BMW. I can't believe that I don't have any. Maybe my brother has some. He's the Photographer. Those were the Good Old Days!

Here's a photo of Souan on the cover of Summit Point Magazine.
