Old photo-long distance kart ride?

OK kids: this one has me stumped.

I seem to recall someone driving across some 3rd world countries (maybe in the 50s or 60s?) in a go kart as a promotional deal.

This obviously posed photo (I think) came from that adventure......I saw this photo as part of a series of Stan Mott "joke" pictures on Facebook, but I think it really happened. Any recollections?
