Being a fan of old movies, one of my favorites is "It Happened One Night" with Clark Gable & Claudette Colbert! Anyone see it? Many actors turned it down but Gable and Colbert did it just for the money, Colbert, who initially refused even got more money to do it. The public loved it so much that it won 5 academy awards! Funny how some things turn out, sometimes a gamble pays off! (y)

"And the walls of Jericho came tumbling down."

Haven't seen that one, but I do enjoy those depression era films. Clark Gable in Test Pilot for one. Fred Astaire musicals, Frank Sinatra in those days when he was still a young crooner and on and on.

Great film! I love Gable, Bogie, Powell, Cagney, and all those old guys. You can probably guess what my all time favorite movie is.

hmmm - does it have something to do with Sidney Greenstreet desperately seeking a statue of a bird?

Bogart made perhaps more classic films than any other actor. In addition to the really great list above there's also Treasure of the Sierra Madre, To Have and Have Not, The Big Sleep, Key Largo, etc.

One of my favorite Gable films is Run Silent, Run Deep, even though he was far too old for the part. He also did several films with Myrna Loy, he was really good in the romantic comedies.

Unfortunately so many war film actors are way too old for the roles they play, cast of "Saving Private Ryan" for example. But it's to get a recognizable face for the audience. And in the old days, they didn't worry about trying to convince you they were what they were playing. Cary Grant in "I was a male war bride" for example, supposed to be a French officer trying to get to the US after WW2, but as soon as he opened his mouth, it was Cary Grant and nothing to make you think he was French...

Walt - check out The Petrified Forest (Bogart, Bette Davis, Leslie Howard). For 1936, it's got a *lot* of social commentary.

Three of my favorite Cary Grant movies are: To Catch a Thief, North by Northwest, and Father Goose.

The movie that made Bogie a star. Not a bad flick at all. I don't think it's I'd ever commit suicide so a girl I just met could take a vacation to France.
