Knew a guy once who got the paint job. Found when he went to pick to pick it up that they had not masked or wiped down the car. So had paint on the glass and chrome, and on the interior where someone had painted the door jams by just opening and spraying. What a mess....

That was effectively their business model - they would spray any car for the advertised price. Nothing more....want the trim masked off - do it before you get there, likewise for the glass/wheels/etc. It was a great deal if you were working on a body shell or budget build where you had the car mostly stripped down anyway. But horrifying what would come out of the booth otherwise....
 
One of our Club members actually had them paint his Healey at one of their shops. Since it was disassembled for restoration, overspray wasn't a problem.
 
Well they couldn't do it for $29.95 with the cost of modern paints.
 
There is still an Earl Scheib at Sunrise and 80 freeway, in Sacramento. Don't know what it cost these days. My brother in law had his Porche Speedster painted at Earls prior to selling it. They painted right over the bird crap on the car.
 
When I looked at having my junkyard rescue painted in the mid-90s the price was $99.95. Thank goodness I had knowledgeable friends who told me basically what's been said above: The price does not include ANY prep; the price does not include any masking; the price does not include engine bay, trunk, or door jambs (with the exception of overspray)...

The real turn-off for me was that my plan was to repaint from the OEM metallic-vomit-brown to a nice blue, and the door jambs et al would have remained as they were. But the deal-breaker was that I'd be driving the car there, which couldn't be done if all the glass was taped over.
