Old Distributor Photo

Not looking for a repeat on the dizzy debate;
just posting a photo for general curiosity.

I was looking thru old photos of the restoration
of my TR6. There has been much debate during the
past year over the dizzy install in my car being
180 degrees wrong.

I found this photo of the not-yet-functional engine
that shows everything replaced except DPO Pedro's
distributor and his funky brake master cylinder. Shortly
after this photo was taken I pulled the dizzy and sent
it to Jeff for rebuilding.

Clearly, the car was purchased with the dizzy rotated
180* from normal. The No.1 plug wire was at 2:00,
as it still is in my new install.

PDO Pedro never had the engine apart so that means some
other PO got the dizzy drive installed in reverse.
Interesting none-the-less. Click on image to enlarge

Hello Dale,

as far as the engine is concerned it doesn't matter.

Of course you need non standard leads as their lengths are different to standard.

Alec

Nope, DPO Pedro lives 2 blocks away. Wendy paid for the
car, I drove it home, the radiator blew up like 4 miles
later, in my driveway. Downhill from there. A total of 67
miles driven, between breakdowns, during the first 14
months I owned the car.

DFP Pedro is a dishonest crook, what can I say?

The radiator *blew up*!!!??

Have you described this impressive incident before?

But if you notice the advance mech. is in the normal position.

Unless I'm really confused (could be), all that has happened is that someone has inserted the spindle 180 degrees out of position (item 110 in this pic):

https://www.mossmotors.com/Shop/ViewProducts.aspx?PlateIndexID=36486

Once that is done then everything else will go together based on that orientation (isn't the drive dog asymetrical meaning that the dizzy can only be inserted one way?).

The advance mech (and distributor body) are oriented correctly because they do not rotate, its just the innards (and out of necessity the plkug wires) that are out of position.

Nope, Geo, I believe you've nailed the problem on the head. The only other possibility IMO is that the dog on the bottom of the distributor has been installed 180 degrees out of position. Not easy, but it can be done (if you use a roll pin to accomodate the misalignment of the holes).

I think Dale's car has both advance & retard on the distributor; if that's true then the distributor body could also be 180 degrees out.
I know it doesn't make any difference to the engine (as long as you can rotate the dist enough to time it properly) but it would bug me personally.
It must be the distributor drive gear is incorrectly orientated, can you pull the gear out from the top once the distibutor is removed?

Graham,

If that were the case, then both units would be on the block side of the housing, rather than the outside. Since this project seems to have come alive again, I'll throw in my two cents again.

When we had the last go around and David went down to PR, I think that he ran out of time, between the brakes and the physical attack that Crypty laid on him to get into this project. I truly think that if he did, he would have moved the wires on the cap, as suggested earlier and all would be well with the lengths.

Perhaps they did try this and were not successful, because I remember Dale posting something to that affect after David left. It's been quite awhile and many projects have passed since then, so I've forgotten much of the detail surrounding this particular saga of Crypty.

But we now have bigger fish to fry with a differential sitting on Dale's garage floor, ready and waiting to be resealed, powder coated and transplanted into Amos, thereby exorcising the last remaining Pedro/Crypty demon from Amos' devil red skin.

Or, will it add to the misery and be another thorn in our intrepid hero's side, taunting him day after day, with new problems and issues to resolve, as Amos once again, slowly climbs back onto it's ever familiar position on the jack stands?

Dale no longer owns a "jack stand car"
