Old car hunting and a great day

I plan to do some old car hunting tomorrow.

I know of a mid-1960's Vauxhall Viva HA in the little town of Vulcan, Alberta and want to find it (at a local scrapyard, don't have the phone number, couldn't find the phone number?, I'm just going show up and ask around...)

Next stop will be Lethbridge, Alberta to browse Marshall Auto Wreckers. I'm told they have lots of old cars (and some interesting import cars) rotting away there and have always wanted to head down there to check out what they have. Website - www.marshallauto.com

Then by the afternoon, just hang around Lethbridge and take in the Chrysler/Mopar show and classic car cruise. Should be a good day... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif
 
Sherlock, if you find an early Mk.III Mini 1000 rotting in one of those yards, I could use an ignition switch/lock (with key).

Actually, there are piles of parts sources here in Canada, both private sellers and British garages. I could make some inquiries, or... check out some Canadian Mini's at www.miniportal.ca and then find the link in classifieds for Craig's List, great website with piles of Mini parts/cars for sale, mainly Canadian vendors.
 
You Canadians are lucky......lots of neat junkyards with LBCs. Not so here in the States.

Mk. III ignition switches are impossible to find new (I've tried MiniMania and several other parts dealers), and impossible to find used.

I didn't find one on the site you mentioned.....so if you know of somebody has one (new or used) for sale, I'd appreciate it.

BTW.....I've heard that Craig's is going out of the parts business....is this true? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif
 
Had a good day overall, with some disappointments.

Stop #1 - After inquiring locally tracked down the yard where the Viva is, but no sign of the owner and was told he is away right now or something like that, at least have a phone number for the guy now

Stop #2 - Disappointment... Arrived to discover a new policy, no public browsing in the yard (something to do with insurance issues!), did spot a 1959 Vauxhall Velox parked in the front, but had to go away empty-handed.

Stop #3 - Just popped into Lethbridge to catch the show. It was an all-Mopars show today with the all-makes show tomorrow when I won't be there... One neat 1979 Plymouth Arrow rally car was there and had a nice chat with the owner. There was also a nice 1960's Jeep Gladiator pickup. Other than that a bunch of big American iron at a local track and on the streets surrounding the show (although did spot a very nice late-1960's Volvo 145S station wagon, but I believe locally owned and not part of the show weekend)

Stop #4 - Headed home, but went back on a side road that winds through the foothills back into Calgary, a very nice drive... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

Wasn't able to make much of an inquiry at the Marshall Auto Wreckers (closed yard now anyway!) I have some resources I could try to tap into...

Some scrapyards up here are pretty good, and some have little to none British stuff. I think some may have seen the pictures before, but have some pictures of old wrecked classic imports at https://community.webshots.com/user/sherlock_canuck Some of them are pictures taken on private property and some are at actual scrapyards.

I have a friend in town that has a '67 Mini 1000 that he's parting out for a VTEC conversion. Would the ignition lock work on your car ?

I may have one but won't know until October when I see my cars again. Someone had installed it on my Mk 1 which I removed and put back to the way a Mk 1 should be. This was a column lock ignition and I have the key but not sure what Mk it came from.
 
David....the '67 model year should be a Mk. II. If it has a 1000 engine, it was probably upgraded from an 850.

If it's a Mk. III, it should have roll-up windows and internal door hinges. If it does, and the ignition lock is on the column, it would probably work on my car.

My Mini started life as a '72 Leyland Mk.III Mini 1000. The guy that built him (Marcel Chichak) says that he used a standard Mk. III ignition switch/lock.

I don't really need the electrical part, just the mechanical part with the tumblers and a key.....but I'll take the whole thing if necessary.

As I've said, they're impossible to find here in the U.S. of A. Sooooooo........if anybody knows where I can beg/borrow/steal/buy/obtain one, new or used, I'd really appreciate it!

I sure do like that trailer. Car in the front is sort of Ok I guess.

Just kidding of course. Mustangs (old) are one of my all time favorite cars. And now the newest one is good looking again.
