Okay, THIS is un-nerving.

Herself, MIL and non-English speaking aunt were JUST through the parking garage door and into the mall when the shots were fired. She prudently hustled the elders as far away from the door (having heard the concussions coming from there) as she could and then they WENT SHOPPING!!!

I'm still twisting over THAT bit of news...

Didn't affect them so they did what women all over the world do - they shopped!

Alrighty then.
So, what did she buy?

Who is it with th' .sig about "women and cats"? How true. But I'll never get used to it!

Glad to learn that all are safe doc.

yup. Been a LONG time since this kinda thing occurred personally. I hate the "trapped" feeling. The contingency planning kicks in, kinda like those silly UNpower'd things you mess with.... "alternates" are on constant update. :smirk:

Wouldn't be a "thang" if it were me in the circumstance, it's that the spousal unit is directly involved and I'm "remote" that kicks up th' adrenal level.

One person was hospitalized and a busy mall parking garage turned into a crime scene after a police-in-volved shooting at the Aventura Mall on Saturday.

Police spokesman Chris Goranitis said the shooting happened shortly after 4:30 p.m. in the parking garage near JCPenney. Officers were responding to a report of a man driving around in a black Mustang pointing a firearm at another motorist in what police described as a case of road rage.

Officers spotted the Mustang on a road along the north side of JCPenney, Goranitis said. But when they approached the car, the man ran. Officers followed him into the garage. Goranitis said the person, a male, pointed the weapon at the officers and what followed was "an exchange of rounds between officers and the subject."

The man was taken to Memorial Regional Hospital in Hollywood. The officers were not hurt.

A weapon was recovered from the scene. Neither the names of the officers nor the name of the man who was shot were released.

The shooting came on a normally busy day for retailers -- the first one after Christmas.

After the shooting, visitors who parked in the garage were forced to wait while the incident was being investigated, the roadway and garage entrance blocked off by police.

Later, officers began escorting drivers back to their cars.

In May of last year, a man opened fire on a woman in another Aventura Mall parking lot, injuring the woman and killing himself.

They claim this sort of thing happens more over the holidays than any other time of the year. Just saw an incident on tv about a bomb on an airliner. Caught the guy! No one hurt! Now they say security is tightened up again. I didn't know it was relaxed? I know it's a pain to some, but as far as I'm concerned, they can keep the tight security always.

Whew, glad to hear it was a good ending Doc. I was off the computer last night so just now saw the news here. Can't imagine your feelings during the ordeal.

Hello from "mits":

Wow! This incident has caused quite a bit of chatter. Fortunately, the police acted quickly and without hesitation.

My aunt had only two days to prepare for her departure back to Germany, and my mother wanted her to see that particular mall...we originally had Sawgrass planned. Now I seldom go to any mall, as a rule. But, my aunt had quite a bit of final shopping to do for her family, gifts from the U.S., apparently our prices are dirt-cheap compared to the costs of goods, there.

Anyway, once we entered the mall, there was no turning back (literally). We were in a virtual bumper to bumper roundabout until we happened upon a great parking space. As I turned into the lot, I heard a car start, and we were immediately accommodated with an parking spot. I have really good luck, in that sense. It doesn't surprise me that someone wouldn't have road rage with the amount of mall traffic.

The incident happened when we were near the JCP entrance in the kids clothing dept. Being so close to the entrance, I heard four rounds, which at that point I said to my mother. "I just heard 4 gunshots". She looked at me funny and mentioned it to my aunt, and they continued to shop. Uh, MOM, I think those were GUNSHOTS..." My aunt looked at me, and asked, "MIAMI VICE?" She doesn't speak English.

I was able to peer outside the doors, which were allowing people in and out, and noticed the police lights and sirens. It wasn't until two or three minutes later that the store alarms went off and they locked the front entrance. Typically, everyone acted as expected. Giddy screaming and laughing, mall personal running through the aisles, people still trying to check out and exit through the doors, etc. My dear aunt ran over to the door with her camera, but the police motioned "no pictures," then the outer doors were rolled down. I was looking for a safe place to duck under in case the shoppers got stupid...

Anyway! I was glad that it didn't turn into long drawn-out thingie.
Being stuck in a packed mall thousands of people would not have been fun, and I would have missed "Dr. Who."

Kudos to the Miami Dade police!
...and, thanks for the kind thoughts.

Mits
Happy 2010.

:savewave:

Well, Mits, glad it all turned out well for you! Here in Albuquerque stuff like that is, I'm sorry to say, all to common. Glad the police made short work of the guy and you made it home in one piece.

By the way, you only have 24,583 posts to go to catch up with Doc!

plus one. :smirk:

Mits,
Everyone here is always concerned when one of 'ours' is involved in anything ranging from car wrecks, hangnails, or shootings (and not necessarly in that order). Glad it had a good ending for you and yours.

Jim

Glad that ended well.....holiday road rage (especially in parking lots) is a bigtime crime spree everywhere.

Thought I had posted this earlier in response to Doc's 'cats & women' comment:

Cats and Women

1) Cats do what they want.
2) They rarely listen to you.
3) They're totally unpredictable.
4) They whine when they are not happy.
5) When you want to play, they want to be alone.
6) When you want to be alone, they want to play.
7) They expect you to cater to their every whim.
8) They're moody.
9) They leave hair everywhere.
10) They drive you nuts and cost an arm and a leg.

Conclusion: They're tiny little women in cheap fur coats.

Finally heard about it on national news just now...said police shot at & hit the guy,
