Ok - tonights problem

don't worry I have at least two diagrams and won't do trial and error - have already melted my hazard switch with a miss step - didn't have time tonight - had 2 meetings - but, I expect tomorrow and I think I have a clue. will keep you posted
 
Well, I took a good look at the wiring diagram and I seem to have reassembled the wires on the solenoid wrong. I also suspect the PO had it working - but not correct. So 1500 owners (and maybe others as well) get out to your cars and answer me this.

1. Does the bottom bolt connect the cable to the starter?

2. Does therefore the top bolt connect the cable to the battery?

3. If 1. & 2. above are correct, do the brown wires (spade connectors) run off the top bolt?

Am I correct that a solenoid is essentially a big relay? If so, does it matter which bolt is hooked up to which as long as it is consistent?

Yes....just a relay.

Therefore, it does not matter which "big" terminal the "big" wires go on.


Assuming you have the normal, smaller red/white wire going to one of the push-on spade terminals......and assuming that red/white wire is on the correct terminal.

If you connect "live" 12V to that terminal using a small jumper wire, the engine should turn over (keep hands clear of fan and be sure car's in neutral).
 
The bolt which wire is connected to which bolt is immaterial. What's important is that the think brown (I believe) wire form the alternator and the wire from the battery are on the same bolt as the other wires. The bolt with the wire going to the starter should have no other wires connected.

If you remove all the wires, you should be left with two bolts and a two pronged spade terminal. The red/white wire must connect to this spade terminal. If you jump to this terminal, and you have the battery/starter correctly wired, the car should turn over. If the car does not turn over, the solenoid is highly suspect.
 
So, who knew that if you hooked up the battery cable and the starter cable backwards the car wouldn't start :wall: thanks all, it's fine now.
