OK...here's the puzzle.

Wow. Your guys went back in and ~assumed~ nothing then. Good for them. Now refer back to my original post with regard to the "builder". Akin to "something fishy"...

Glad the mystery was solved. That's brutal.

So... are you going to "mention" this to the original builder?
 
That's one nice thing about building your own. You always have access to the builder in case you need to have a talk with him/her about his/her shoddy workmanship /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/wink.gif

I would have probably spent months trying to figure out what was going on there. That sounds like something that I could have easily done but I was pretty anal about my record keeping when I tore my 1500 down since I had never been inside a British motor before. Glad you found the culprit but I'm sorry it cost a new crank in the process.

Sounds like someone pulled the plug to properly clean out the oil galley, and then forgot to reinstall it.
That's why I use a checklist during a build, along with a BIG dry erase board that's the first thing I see when I open the door, just as a nudge to the old noodle!

You'd have a laugh to see how redundant I can be when something like a V-12 Ferrari or Jag is the "patient". Dry erase AND a paper checklists. Progress marked by line thru of each "step". And photos... lots of photos. Mainly for if/when there are any questions or problems, there's a "Visual Evidence Trail" to refer to.

I've done enough of this work to be confident... until that 3AM: "Oh, man... can't remember that I torqued 'this-or-that' before I sealed the case?" All I gotta do is check "the list" to be sure. If nothing else it's a Peace-of-Mind crutch... Yeah, I know: "Gee, Dude, yer OLD!!!"

Once again, Doc. Great minds and like thoughts. Checklists were kind of burned into me at a tender age. Back before digital cameras, I shot lots of film, and even had a couple of Polaroids for "instant" stuff.

It was several months!!! I burned up two sets of bearings, and final a crank (Thank goodness the guy who rebuilt the second time was the one who burned up the crank) Oh we also found that the first crank was from a 1296 and not a 1500.

I don't know the original builder...this wan an e-bay buy that wasn't all it should have been. Over all it worked out just a lot of frustration. I figure the original motor was trash, I had to have a new block. The head on the original motor was trash and I would have had to have it rebuilt. In the end, I spent actually less money to have a new block, rebuilt head, new pistons, rings, crank, rods, bearings, main bearings,thrust washers, lifters, oil pump basically all new rebuilt. I tried to go less expensive and paid the price ending up doing it the right way in the end.
These cars are fun but not terribly forgiving. NO short suts allowed and I learned this the hard way.

Sounds just like my life in aviation.....
 
The best place to keep detailed notes is when you are inside something so like doc says you don't have to pull the pan to make sure you torked the mains.
