20/50 mineral for the engine (Castrol is fine), 50 weight non-detergent for the gearbox, because modern oils damage the seals.

Was curious, as I've heard that with syn oil, it doesnt matter if you dont do the mileage, dump and replace every months or so as it breaks down.
With detergent I've been told its ok to go from detergent to other oils, but not the reverse
I use the gtx myself, but was curious seeing how the tolerances of bearings etc was greater in yesteryear

Short answer, 20-50 normal. A pretty good discussion here:

.... A very interesting article. So we need zinc and phoshporus in the oil to reduce the wear of the camshaft lobes and lifters....
Does anyone know if a mixture of the oils recommended in this article with a little synthetic oil would prevent the zinc and phosphorus from doing it's job of reducing camshaft/lifter wear ? It would seem to me that a mixture of a little synthetic oil with these would give " best of both worlds " performance ?
Do we have any chemists or metalurgists on the forum ?

Nope ED, had to memorise the book to pass Chem. However, I have been using Valvoline since day one no problems at all. 60W Summer and 40W Winter.---Keoke

Not a chemist, but have read in a couple of other places that mixing oils or additives is likely to cause degradation of "some" oils. I suspect you are on your own with the mixing issue.

Edit:

But there are a group of these new oils that are blends which might work, don't know if they come in the single heavier weights though.---Keoke-?

/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumbsup.gif Yeah, I never looked it up just a hold over from my Volvo days. But I run it in the gearboxes too in spite of their "Wet Clutch" warning works great!.Thanks for the tip.---Keoke- /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cowboy.gif

Thanks !

A lot of good information. It looks like some synthetics contain enough ZDDP for our engines. Since the information is scattered around in different articles and web sites. Perhaps we should make a chart of all the acceptable brands of oil that contain enough
ZDDP ? And keep it in the tech tips section ?

Good idea there Ed K!
Now when was the last time you saw this stuff!, 3 pint tin still unopened in original box!
