Oil/ water gauge removal from 59 BE

I'm removing my dash to recover it. I've gotten to the water/oil gauge without any problems (steering wheel was a piece of cake!).

I've gotten the oil line off the gauge, but how do you remove the water temp. line? Do I have to pull it from the engine? Seems like there's a short metal sleeve over it that I've spread but still can't move it from gauge. There's also two small screws on the outside of the gauge right where the connector inserts - removed those but still no good.

Before I take the big hammer to it...anyone have any ideas? I decided at this point to come in and ask the board. It's about 9 pm on Sunday night....time for a beer...

DO NOT REMOVE THE LINE FROM THE GAUGE!!!!!!!!!!!
Doing so will require the gauge to be repaired. Remove the sensing bulb from the radiator,(or cyl. head), and carefully thread everything through the hole in the firewall. Be careful not to kink the line. Replace those two screws, as they hold the gauge internals to the case.

Jeff....

Thanks for the info. T (and WARNING!!) There was a time way back when I would have just yanked the sh*t out of it. Now I think...hmmm...let me just check with someone who might now.

I thank you...the gauge thanks you.

Bruce, your wallet will thank me more. The last time I checked it was about $185 to have a gauge repaired by the pros.
I'm glad somebody caught your post in time!

Wow, what a bummer to screw up a good working guage.

Just think...that would be the first thing I've broken when working on an LBC!!!! (Yeah....right....)

meh. Good save, Jeff.

A friend here did a 'baad thing' then called to ask how to re-attach the "wire" to his gauge... He was mildly embarrassed on finding out it was a capillary tube not a wire. We installed the replacement as he kept mumbling to himself...
