Oil Recommendations

As in my earlier posting I did warn everyone of my lack of knowledge, therefore, I hope my question does not appear too silly. I need to top up the oil in the engine and the gearbox. Does anyone have any suggestions as to the correct oil to use? Thanks.

It's better to ask than to do it wrong and break something

The answer to which oil for the engine kind of depends on where you live. In warm climates, 20W50 is recommended. In colder climates, I would recommend 10W30. If you're putting it away for the winter, an oil change first is a very good idea.

For the transmission, the manual calls for 30-weight non-detergent. Using non-detergent oil is especially true if the transmission has never been rebuilt (or it was rebuilt a long time ago). If you now put detergent oil in it, the "crud" that coats the inside of the case will come loose and plug the overdrive screen.

Hi Red,

I have used Castrol 20W50 for my BJ8 here in Seattle. This is one of the oils recommended in the back of the drivers handbook for this climate.
Hope that helps.

Cheers,

Scot

Finding it difficult to find 30-weight non-detergent oil. I have tried Kragen Auto Parts and Pep-Boys without success. Any suggestions to where I can find 30-weight non-detergent oil in the San Francisco area. Thanks.

Down here in Southern California, I get 30-weight non-detergent oil for my BN1's transmission at Auto Zone. (Don't know if they're up north.) The brand is called Coastal.

I was running castrol 10w30 originally but changed to 20w50.

I've had a couple of people recommend 10W30 for use here in the midwest, and that's what I've been using. Also, I've been advised that non-detergent oil should be used in the engine as well as the transmission. Does any one have differing advice???

If you're not sure what is in it now, what ever viscosity you choose (and there have already been some good suggestions), I would recommend doing a complete oil/filter change so you will no what you have and are not mixing diff viscosity.
