TR6 Oil pressure after spinner adapter

Has anyone seen a substantial increase in their oil pressure after installing the spin on adapter and filter? I’ve gone from roughly 50 psi to over 75 psi while accelerating. I’ve never seen my pressure go that high. I’m worried there may be something wrong with it. Also an audible sound can be heard in the oil pan after the engine’s been driven for a while. I’m assuming it’s the oil pump.

Any noise down there is a problem. I would not drive the car until I figured that out. You still have the same pressure regulator and gauge, correct? I do not see away for the pressure to change. Did you do any adjusting or use different thick oil?

steve

Same oil before and after changing it (Amzol 20-50). Yea, I’m not happy about what I hear down below. But it’s all after the switch to the adapter and spinner.

Is the audible sound in the oil pan with engine running? (Obviously being engine-driven oil pumps…)

lol, that’s kind of a funny question, but yes. No sound with the engine off.
Yes it is . The intent is to confirm the odd chance that the noise is not related to oil slowly returning to the sump, due to some restriction in the system (causing the high oil pressure). The sound was described as "audible" - my first thought was a dripping sound.

I'd try a different cartridge.

This could be nothing...or it could be serious. I would look inside the valve cover after a short run to see if you are actually getting oil into the gallery. Another option is to undo a gallery plug and turn the engine over with the starter. If you are getting oil, then you are good, but the filter you are using is restrictive. If you are not getting oil, then there is a major problem with your adapter plate, so DO NOT RUN until you figure it out.

I'm surprised that no one has asked about the filter itself, although it has been hinted at by TomMull. Which filter by brand and part number is fitted?

I am going to get a stethoscope and listen around different areas of the engine. I did a little more research and found that the noise I’m hearing can actually be caused by a worn timing chain tensioner. The tick sound goes away any speed above an idle. Shows back up, and inconsistently when it comes back down to idle speed, which is roughly 750-800 rpm. Concerning the oil pressure, it appears that it did drop back between 50 and 60 psi. I removed the adapter, looked for anything obvious. The filter was full, so I’m going to let that go for now. I took the pressure relief pin and spring out, cleaned it up, measured the spring length. It was correct for the length so I put that back in.. The rockers appear to be getting oil, unlike an old V8, the oil isn’t splashing all over the place, but you can see that the oil weeps from the holes. If anyone can verify that that’s normal for the top end, let me know. Thanks

Yes, the oil to the top end is not full pressure. If you see the weeping you are good. It sounds like you are good to go!

The filter came with the adapter from Moss and is a Fram, not sure of the p/n.
If the photo on the Moss website is accurate, the Fram filter they offer is a PH3600. Seeing some posts on other sites, there is mention of the Fram PH3600 for TR6 spin on conversions so it likely is accurate. You might want to try a different filter and see if that makes a difference. I would suggest Wix and a look at the cross reference charts shows the Wix 51516/51516XP to be their part number. Also, Wix makes the NAPA Gold and Platinum line of oil filters under the NAPA part numbers FLI 1516 (gold) and PFL 41516 (platinum). The big difference is that the Wix XP & NAPA Platinum use a full synthetic filter media while the Wix 51516 and the NAPA Gold do not. From what I understand the initial filtering capability of the gold is better, but the platinum is better for long oil change intervals. Given how most Triumphs and such are used these days, I doubt they have long oil change intervals on a mileage basis. Lots of oil filter related stuff on "Bob is the Oil Guy" if you want to go down that rabbit hole.

Tybalt, thank you for that! Yes that Fram number is correct. I know of the Wix filters and will look into a swap. All great recommendations from the group. Thanks all. I’ll keep you posted
