Oil pan gasket

It's leaking and in need of replacement. The Fel-pro gasket is locally available and affordable. From the pictures online, it looks like the Fel-pro gasket is cork. The last gasket I got was paper based, and it did not last very long before developing leaks. Do you guys have any experience or opinions on the Fel-pro brand gasket?

Original gasket is cork on the ends and heavy gasket material on the sides.

Installation is the critical item. If you get the cork ends...DON'T trim them. If the engine is in the car, support the pan with a piece of 2x6 or 2x8 and jack it into position. Then install the bolts. You can't ask the bolts to pull the pan tight. It won't be even and you risk stripping them or he block.

No..not at all.

BUT... how would I know he has a 1500? I can't remember my own cars!

Maybe, a good policy would be to remind everyone what year, etc....... just sayin'

Sorry Peter... I ended up buying a can of aerosol black RTV. We'll see how that works.

oooooooooo.... um... use it like Vermouth in a dry Martini. Open the tube and put it down next to the gasket.... don't let them touch...

I love black RTV! But I only use it to fix leaks in my drip pan under my mill.

I used Hylomar. It' a little hard to find, but highly recommended. I've heard that RTV can break down and work its way into the oil.
Hylomar never hardens, but if you use it, use it sparingly.

X2 on never cut cork ends

Agree with you Trevor!! I love it as well but hardly ever use it. Recored a radiator in a car I bought cause it wouldn't stay cool. When the rad guy unsoldered the tanks he found the original core plugged nearly full of black RTV bits!!!

Kurt.
