Oil pan gasket seal

I have removed, cleaned and flattened the mounting rim of the pan. There was no sealant of any kind on the mating surfaces. Is this proper, or is it best to use some kind of gasket sealer? If so, what would be recommended?

It should seal up with only the gasket. I usually apply a thin coating of RTV blue gasket maker to the pan itself to help hold the gasket in place when bolting it back up. One of the best things you can do to ensure a good seal is true up any places on the pans mating surface that are not straight.

I prefer to smear both sides of the gasket with Hylomar. RTV has a nasty habit of forming a bead along the joint (if you don't use just the right amount), which can potentially break off inside the motor.

And yet another method -- I use RTV between the gasket & pan and sit the whole thing upside down on a sheet of glass to set up over night. Any squeeze-outs or excess can be cleared or trimmed. I then use Hylomar between the gasket and the block.

+1 on Hylomar, especially in that location.

As for Hylomar Moss shows M and AF/ as in advanced formulation. I"m guessing AF. ????

I have a habit of lightly striking each bolt hole with the ball end of a ballpien hammer to put the edges of the hole slightly lower than the running surface of the flange.

Here's the package of Hylomar that I use...

They also have classic "Universal Blue" listed, P/N GGC102. That would be my choice, but I've recently been using "blue racing" as Elliot showed. It seems to work just as well, but be a bit more difficult to apply and have a tendency to separate within the tube.

Once I've used up what I have (bought 5 tubes when HF had it), I'll go back to Universal Blue.

As always, thanks to all for great guidance. I have found Universal Blue at NAPA
