Oil Pan Gasket Replacement

I'm getting ready to drop my crossmember to change the pads so I thought I might as well change my oil pan gasket while its handy. I've heard some discussion regarding soaking the cork gaskets in oil before using them. Would this be necessary with my oil pan gasket?

I spray mine with Permatex High Tack. As long as the mating surface is clean and dry, it helps hold the gasket in place and seals it also. Plus, if you need to remove it in the future, it separates very easily. I've used it for years with good results. JMHO. PJ
 
High Tack works great, RTV less-so. With RTV it is best to thincoat both sides of the cork, offer up the pan (and HOSPITAL clenliness of both mating surfaces is mandated in either case) just "snug" then walk away for a few hours before final tightening. With RTV if you squeeze down on it while "wet" it acts as a lubricant and the gasket squirms around and can cause a misalignment and leak. I've done it both ways and my B engine rebuilds don't leak/drip.
