Oil Pan Gasket Installation

So, how would you recommend installing a cork oil pan gasket (in a TR8 for me)?

I replaced mine yesterday...but....

My friend said to apply a bead of high temp copper silicone to the oil pan and lay on the gasket. Made sens as I looked at the oil pan as there are recesses in the lip and filling that would seem to help.

He said to place another bead of high temp copper silicone to the gasket and install.

I did all that, but as I tightened, goo came out in all directions. It looks OK now that I have things tightened up and wiped down, but I worry about not having cork to metal contact anymore.

Was I lead astray?

I wouldnt use any type of silicone, the stuff that oozez out on the inside will fall off in clumps and get into the oil pump strainer, I took mind off to check the thrust bearings and found chunks of silicone in the strainer, could choke off the oil pump. just use some regular permatex gasket stuff.

I use a thin layer of silicone to keep the gasket on the oil pan. Apply to the pan put the gasket on and then flip the pan over on the ground and let it sit for a bit and then install. Becareful to not over tighten the bolts. If you start to see the cork gasket squashing out your too tight!

I'd hesitate to use anything other than a "gasket dressing", Hylomar for example, between the gasket and the engine block.
I've used adhesives and dressings between the gasket and the pan so I can't say I favor one or the other in that application.

Randy, Didn't you like my method. Sealed it right up. I did have to retighted a little after I ran it the first time.
Remember ,not much torqueage to the bolts!

I second the Hylomar....

Just replaced my oil pan gasket in the '3, and used a thin layer of Hylomar on both sides, working it onto the gasket....

If I use that, do I need a cork gasket? The Universal Blue seems to suggest you use it in place of a gasket.
Comments?

Randy, When I put together my top end I put that on almost all my gaskets

Yes in the sump you will want the gasket. The only time, in my experience, that you can omit a gasket and use just Hylomar is if the 2 mating surfaces are a machined fit. What comes to mind as an example is the choke assembly mated to the carb body. I'm sure there are other places though.
BTW Hylomar is now more easily found in places like Advance Auto since it's now under the Permatex brand.

PB, thanks for mentioning Advanced Auto.... the last time I was at my local good NAPA, I bought their last tube o' Hylomar....
