Oil on the carpet/floormat?

I have found oil on the drivers side floor mat twice now in my 73 MGB roadster, and after looking at what I think is the clutch fluid resevoir, I think it is coming from there as the fluid level is way down. The brake fluid seems alright, which is the larger resevoir right next to it?

Any ideas, and can this be something else? I havent watched where it is leaking from, but after doing some reading, it appears that some people have problems with oil coming from the heater box when they find oil on the carpet in this area.

Thanks in advance

Is it oil? Have you check the fitting on the oil pressure gauge, or the hose?

When this happened to my '74 B-GT, it was fluid leaking from the master cylinder, so I replaced both clutch and brake masters, just to be sure. You may be able to tell if it is brake fluid - it has a distinctive smell.

Likely brake fluid, from the clutch master.

You should be able to determine what it is by colour.

Oil - black

DOT brake fluid. - light amber (or other colours)

It appears to be a very light oil. I assume it is the clutch master, since that is the reservoir that is low. I will also check the oil pressure guage line before digging into the clutch master replacement, just in case.

Thanks

My Midget would leak from the brake master cylinder. I would deal with it till it got bad enough that the pedal would be wet. That was dangerous when braking. It happened on a few master cylinders I've had over the years. It sounds like it is your clutch master cylinder from your description of low fluid levels. The fluid will run down one of your pedals, so feel the pedal levers, and one should be wet.

It'll be th' clutch pedal.
