I am getting ready to take a short trip in my 66 BJ8 and thought I would top off the oil. I plan on using 20 w 50 for the engine. It is my understanding the gearbox and rear axle use 90 w gear oil. The manual says "hypoid oil" What is the difference? Any recommendations?

The gearbox uses engine oil. I use 40w non-detergent. There have been several other threads on different oil combinations to use. Do a search to find them.

access hole for the transmission is under a carpet flap on the transmission tunnel. It should be left of center (toward the driver's side) and under the heater box, behind the counsel. There maybe (should be) a rubber plug inserted in the hole of the transmission tunnel. Remove the rubber plug. Tranny dip stick is under the plub. Add or fill tranny fluid through the dip stick hole. It requires a small funnel and a good flashlight. Refill tranny with Redline MT 90 (my choice, expensive but provides smoother shifting).
