Is it common for a Spit 1500 to be leaking oil between the head and the block at the back of the engine? I'm not loosing water or getting oil in the water, just leaking about 2qt a week.
 
Are you sure the leak is not coming from the back of the Valve Cover?
 
Definitely not. head is dry until the joint with the block.
 
Never common for a head to leak.
On the spit ,pretty easy to pull the head for a new gasket?
 
Accessibility is good. Finding time to change it is the problem. Currently my daily driver while the other cars are sitting side by side at the shop for repairs. As I type this I am getting a lecture because of the pool of oil in front of the building where the Spit is parked.
 
How much oil are you losing? I think it would be unusual for a head gasket to leak "puddles" of oil without other symptoms.

The car runs very well. I drive 60 miles a day back and forth to work. Seems that the oil it leaks drips off the frame while parked and traces of smoke come out from under the car when running from oil hitting the exhaust. I put a quart in it monday evening and another in it yesterday morning.




So maybe it's 3qt a week leak.
 
There is a "bolt" in the back of the head, not too far above the head/block seam. It's off center, closer to the driver side of the engine.
It needs a copper washer because it seals a branch of an oil galley that carries oil under pressure to the rocker assembly
 
Well I'll be damaged! It has one and there is no washer on it! :wall:
I even have been all over the back of that thing and never noticed it there!
 
The washer should be copper,sd, when you go to replace it. Copper soft and squishes somewhat when you tighten up.
