Oil leak question

Sorry if this is an obvious question, but I am new at working on the guts of an MGB. With the hood open and looking at the valve cover, I see a bit of oil creeping down the left hand side of the cover. The apparent origin is from the piece that screws the cover down (nearest the fire wall). I suspect that there is a gasket of some sort that has gone bad. I suppose I should replace it and the front one at the same time as well as the valve cover gasket itself. Am I on the right track here?
Cheers,
Mike

Thanks, David. I was just looking at the exploded diagrams in a VB catalogue and will order some. What do you think about replacing the valve cover gasket at the same time? Is it a particularly "challenging" thing to attempt?

The valve cover gasket can be replaced by my 7 year old grandson with direction, hehe.

Just might be the easyest thing you do but for adding oil or water.

Thanks, Jack

It looked like it might be, but my experience of do-it-yourself in almost any area is that things are trickier than one might think and almost always take 3 times as long as one would expect. However, I will go ahead and give it a go.
Thanks again,
-Mike

Mike:

Just keep checking it as you crank down the two nuts evenly to make sure one side doesn't pop out. If it does pop out, just loosen, realign and go for it again.

No sealant necessary, since it is cork. It doesn't need to be that tight either, 10-15lbs of torque will do it. If they are not overtightened and do not have sealant on them, they may be reused a couple of times.

If you have any problems just ask us, or we can send Jack's grandson up there <devil>.

Mike, Where in SC? PJ

Grandson is in North Alanta. Lawrenceville in fact.

I live in Mount Pleasant, which is immediately to the East of Charleston, across the Cooper River....as we used to say before the invasion of folks from Ohio and New Jersey, this is "the pleasant side of the river"

Thanks again fellows,
_Mike
