can anyone tell me a likely source of an oil leak in my BJ8,
seem's only to happen at highway speed, i think it is migrating from bellhousing near starter. [no clutch slippage]
does it have anything to do with the back end of cam shaft???
tappet side covers are dry, rocker gasket dry also ????

Well it just might be a worn but not replaceable rear crankshaft seal. If it is it can be eliminated by installing an aftermarket replaceable rear crankshaft seal.

However, the oil is transfered to the bellhousig after the engine shuts down.

does it have anything to do with the back end of cam shaft???

Could be but not likely. a loose galley plug might do it too

Hi 59er,

Since you feel the oil is most prominently exiting your engine during runs, my first thought would suggest that you are experiencing the results of blow-by. Since all cars produce piston blow-by as a result of combustions, add ware to an engine built as loosely as our Healeys and you have clearances wide enough to pass the wind of an elephant. With this pressure produced, add hot oil vapor, splash, and combustion gases and you have a mix that will easily pass the reverse helical use by the engine to retain fluids within its crankcase.

Although many have installed real oil seals to help prevent this condition, it does require the de-installation of the engine. Others have tried choosing a PCV to diminish or eliminate blow-by pressure, however, most have not installed an Oil Catch Can to capture oil and vapor prior to its passage through the PCV and many have experienced prematurely plugged PCVs and have endured problems with more-than-expected amounts of oil in their combustion.

The bottom line, if it’s a Healey, oil will leak out. Expect it and if it is you desire, try some of the solutions.

Removal of the engine and machining is only required on the 100-4 model cars. 6 cylinder cars only require that the transmssion be removed.---Fwiw--Keoke--
 
Keoke,

I was unaware that the 6-cyl could have an oil seal installed without removing the engine. I was under the impression that removal of the back plate for machining was all but impossible when installed.

I installed my rear crank oil seal with the engine still in the car, wasn't that difficult actually. You do have to remove the transmission, and the engine rear plate. It would've helped to be able to lift the car up a little higher than jack stands allow, very cramped quarters.
 
Could the oil filter be the problem? Is it an original canister type? That can be hard to make seal, and may not leak much while the engine isn't runninng.

earlier failed to mention significant upgrades to my BJ8
have installed external rear main,pcv system[works great],front crank ss sleeve,high flow oil pump,
obsereved photo of rear view [c/o mr forbes] i see a triangular threaded pattern adjacent to rear of cam is there a seal at this point??
this is the quadrant that pukes oil???
i like the catch can idea,in my old healy w bad rockers, saved a fortune in cheap oil[.28 qt] with one.

Well there is a large one piece , "seal" , gasket between the back of the engine and the rear engine plate.---Keoke
 
Mr Forbes,
i am hoping that you can help me understand an aspect of the rear image of your engine. the area @ rear of cam seems to have a triangular bolt hole pattern?
is this a sealing surface? what is best method?
can my bj8 leak [1 qt per300mi] from here & not contaminate the clutch???
as posted before, engine has ext r main,pcv sys,hi flo oil pump.
any ideas appreciated.... with respect 59er
 
This is the gasket between the engine plate and the block: I used Hylomar sealant to make sure it sealed.
