Oil gauge stays at 20

64Bj8. The needle on the oil guage shows 20 when the car is off.

Currently I am replaceing the freeze plugs so the cars up on jacks, not running. Today I noticed that my oil guage is showing 20. I tap it but nothing happens. I also hope that is the last thing I have to work on, but that doesn't happen either.

OK, that bead blast dust got everywhere. Think it's related to this guage problem?

Should I be concerned about showing 20? Would like to know, before I start the car. Roger

OH Roger, I guess there could be dirt in the guage. But you just might fire the engine and see if it registers a higher pressure with the engine running.Actually, you won't have to start the engine,With the ignition off use the button on the starter solenoid to turn the engine over and see if oil pressure rises,if it does, then start it run it briefly and shut down.if the guage goes to zero you probably cleared the obstruction.Should it still rest on 20 I think Nisonger has a customer coming up.---Fwiw--Keoke- /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

----NO! Roger you not pose to bite em.They are one of the premier guage repair groups in the US. Just do a search.---Keoke-- /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

I,ve alread sent my fuel and speedometer gauges to West Valley Auto Electronics in Reseda CA, for repair. They came back looking like new. Yet to try them though.

Now don't shoot me, I'm only the messenger, but Moss sells a direct replacement Oil Pressure/Water Temp gauge, which comes with a 77" capillary tube, for $144.95.

Seems I'm paying about $125-$150 everytime I have my gauges rebuilt. Maybe just get the new one from Moss? Comments on quality?

If I have mine rebuilt, I don't see Moss selling just the capillary tube, which I'm told can break very easy. Where does one purchase the capillary tube, should one (me) break mine?
Thank you, Roger

One does not replace the capillary tube. Oh I have seen instruction on how to do it but think the 150$ for the complete unit would be cheep at twice the price. The overhaul places do replace these gages, use ice and sodering etc etc. Don't even bother. Looked like a job for professionals to me and no telling how many you would need to do to learn how.

Roger!, Just box it up and send it to Nisonger and it will come back looking like new. Aftermarket guages emulate the originals but can be spotted a mile away.---Keoke- /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/yesnod.gif

Keoke, I agree about keeping what I have and fixing it, if it comes to that. But, just in case, should murphy be there while I am removing the capillary tube and it breaks, where do I get another one? Not repairable I read. Thanks, Roger

NO Problem Roger, Nisonger is going to replace it with new anyway.----Keoke- /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/yesnod.gif

Oh I guess you been readin them Moss books again!--Keoke- /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Yep, they the experts.

Hi Roger,
When my BN2 gage did the exact same thing, wouldn't go below 20, I very carefully put finger pressure on the hard line at the gage back. The line is so stiff that any misalignment of the line distorts the mechanism inside of the gage & makes it bind. I was able to very slightly bend the line so that it didn't put pressure on the gage. The gage is still accurate & returns to zero now. Sometimes it would also stick at 20 & required pressing on the line to get it to snap up to 60 where it belonged.

Try this first before trying to un-thread the temp gage capillary tube.

They really should have put a flex line on the back of the gage so that the line does not distort the gage's insides when it is misaligned.
