I'm getting ready to change the fluid in my tranny/overdrive and the manual says to use Castrol GTX. What weight oil are you supposed to use? Any recomendations on what other brands to use?
 
We use 30 wt non-detergent oil.Reasons: constant viscosity,constant lube characteristic.Multi vis {10-30} changes w/ heat.Detergent oils break up deposits and may cause clogs.We have a lot of owners bring cars in that have the wrong oil{as well as the other o/d issues}.We also use kerosene to clean out old gunk {about a quart or so,twice} in really bad cases.Many times we find that the solenoid needs cleaning or adjustment,and the kickdown switch as well.Take care refilling on a level surface,don't over-fill.Best of luck ...
 
You might wish to read an article about appropriate transmission/differential oils for Big Healeys at www.my austin healey.com. In his technical tips, he recommends Redline MT-90 for the transmission, and Redline 75W90 in the differential. Granted, the author races his cars, and likely uses these products for their anti-heat properties. I read the Redline literature on line, and it seems to support his claims. Your tranny capacity with overdrive is about 3.55 litres. A conversion to the Redline product will cost about $50 or so.
