Oil for Steering Rack?

While trying to get my Sprite up to par with a general service and lubrication, I put a couple of pumps of grease into the steering rack. As I looked at the manual later, I see that it calls for oil in the steering rack.

Does anyone add oil instead of grease to the rack? How do you get oil in through a standard zerk fitting?

I gotta say that I haven't noticed any adverse effects from the errant grease injection.

I'd check under the boots, If they are dry then you know the grease has gunked up. I use a very thin grease and it makes its way out into the area where the inner tie rod end is located.

I installed a new OEM rack in my MK III Midget, it has no zerks, nowhere to oil it.

Anyone have experience with one of these? Where does the oil/grease go in? :wall:

I've never seen a "thin" grease for use in a grease gun. I've always used high pressure grease that is recommended for chassis lube, u-joints, etc.

Trevor, I believe, use's John Deere corn head grease. That may be a little hard to find for some of you. I use 80/90 thru an old gun with the grease tube plunger taken out. I just make sure I keep it verticle and it pumps 80/90 just fine.

Thanks, Kurt. That's a good tip. I've got an old gun that I'll convert this weekend.

The orginal oil gun had a on the end that you just pushed, it was spring loaded and was used vertical.
